Confucius & Co.: Thoughts of the Chairman

Confucius lived between 551-479BC and taught the future business administrators of China's Emperors and ruling elite. His topics are recognisably business topics, his students recognisable as future modern business managers in the themes they discussed and the ways they discussed them. It was a short step to adapt his Sayings and bring them to life in the modern business idiom, yet still retain 98% of his original text in its English translation. For me, the real pleasure and durability of Confucius lie in the thoughts and references that spring to mind as you read his words.

5Say it Again, Confucius  Feb 07, 2011
By Philip Lund "Compelling Selling"
It amazes me how relevant Confucius's thinking is, even today.

SAY IT AGAIN CONFUCIUS...................

On being a great Chairman
`A great Chairman is sparing in words by prodigal in deeds'.

..And the Chief Accountant
`The Chief Accountant acted only after thinking thrice. Twice is quite enough'.

On Administration
`Let the other man do his job without interference'.

On Industrial Relations
`He who is fond of bravery but complains of poverty is going to create disorder'.

On Mergers and Investment
`If everyone dislikes it, it must be looked into. If everyone likes it, it must be looked into.'

On Women
`Only women and small-minded people are hard to have around the house. If you become close to them, they turn non-compliant. If you keep them at a distance, they turn resentful.'

Advice to Young Management
`If a manager does not give thought to problems which are still distant, he will be worried by them when they come nearer.'

On the Fundamentals of Good Management
`Good Management is no remote ideal! You have only to desire it and straightaway it arrives'.
