Consciousness: What You Should Know About It

“Know thyself,” is inscribed in stone at the entrance to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. For Socrates, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Plato likens us to one spending life chained in a dark cave. It seems that some people, living two or three thousand years ago, had discovered something. They had opened the door to something they regarded as having the highest value some insight that makes life worth living. What is it they came to know? That is the sole subject of this book. What they knew, and, more importantly, how we can come to know what is so enriching. Some insight to start the examined life, some insight that makes life worth living…that allows us to peer out of the dark cave. This is not some secret knowledge passed down through the ages. It appears in the writing of many people who value the examined life. This topic is not touched on in high school or university. I have never seen it broadcast on television, nor explored in any movie. I feel strongly that an entire book is needed to help absorb this key topic…the key to the door of perception.

2Largely a collection of perceptual illusions  Jun 09, 2011
By Rick Evertsz
This is the first book I've bought where there were no customer reviews. I doubt I'll do that again.

In an effort to make the point that our perception of the world is subjective, the book presents a long sequence of sensory illusions. The point was made with the very first illusion. The others are redundant. I find such books frustrating. They have a point to make "Not all trees are green". They show you a tree with red leaves; fine, I've got it. They then spend the rest of the book showing other trees that are not green. It's nice to have a few examples, but not a whole book full.

Each chapter introduces a different sensory modality (visual, auditory, etc.). The penny slowly dropped - too slowly because I was reading the Kindle version, so it's not so easy to flip around the book and surmise that nothing much will change. I ended up skimming the remaining chapters until the author moved back to a more general discussion of consciousness, at the very end. At least the citation links worked in the Kindle version (they don't work in some Kindle books).

So, even though I bought this book sight unseen, without any preconceptions, I was disappointed.

I hate writing negative reviews, but felt compelled to express my opinion, because there are still no customer reviews of this book.

If you would like to read about various perceptual illusions, you might get more out this book than I did. If you are looking for insights into the nature of consciousness, you may find this book wanting.
