Controlling Your Hormones: Power From Above, Within, and Without

Controlling Your Hormones describes how ancient science was far ahead of present science in the control of inner hormones. The ancients taught how to first reset and clear the mind and then make an image of who and what they desired to be. Their methods were based on studies of heroes, children and actors to determine their powers of manifesting the transformational hormonal changes such as produced by crying, laughing and anticipation. Endocrinology is used to explain that the process consists of shifting hormones in the body to duplicate or physically manifest a gut-felt image or vision of what is to be. The ancient and modern sciences are compared since they both use anthropomorphic descriptions of the inner powers. For instance, the powers of the early Greek gods Aphrodite and Eros can be directly related to neuropeptide and steroid hormones. The book is also interesting in that it exposes the brilliant sophistry that hid the ancient truths for millennia.

4Very interesting hypothesis  Nov 13, 2010

Truly, this is an interesting read, both for Hinduism enthusiast, or for the layman. Peck interprets basic Hindu beliefs and passages in the terms of hormonal maintenance. While this may seem to be farfeched, it is not far off the mark. The practices of Hatha Yoga, for instance, represented in his book by passages from the Hathapradipika, is based on maintenances of the endocrine system, which is generally provided for in the chakra system. He makes a real point in identifying the hatha yoga practice of bandha as the "girthing" which was mentioned in ancient times and not only maintains but strengthens that system.

I quesion however his interpretation of passages from the other Hindu writings, passages from the Rg Veda and the Rudrayamala. Iquesiton someof Peck's interpretations of the Rg Veda. The passages from the Rudrayamala are taken from an extremely mysitical writing of Abhinavagupta dealing with Mantra. I really have no basis to critize his interpretations from these writings because I do not understand or read Sanskrit, and I am assuming Peck does.

Overall, this is worthwile book with an interesting twist on commonly and not so commonly known Hindu writings.

5modern/ancient interpretations  Sep 18, 2010

an interesting tome. i came upon this book searching for a copy of the rudrayamala, which is partially contained at the end of the book, as well as partial rig veda and partial hathapradipadika. the writer is attempting to create and esoteric-type translation based on mechanics of breaking previously fused syllables to reveal true meanings of the exoteric writing in sanskrit. the result sometime stretches credibility, not unusual for exoteric-type interpretations, and sometimes rings true. the treatment of endrocrine glands is based primarily on the perineal bud and the breasts. it seems a little short sighted to exclude all the other glands, but is valuable for what it does cover.

5Something to consider when trying to improve oneself  Feb 12, 2009
By Midwest Book Review
The chemicals within one's body, hormones, control so much of a person. "Controlling Your Hormones: Power From Above, Within, and Without" is about dealing with one's hormones and gaining control of them in order to better become what someone wants to be. Citing countless studies and research into the hormones of the human body, Peck lays out the information in a usable manner for nonspecialist general readers. "Controlling Your Hormones" is something to consider when trying to improve oneself.
