Welcome to the chain gang! Feb 13, 2008
By Riley0091 I purchased Hellcats, Vixens, & Vicedolls: Women, Crime, and Kink of the Fifties and enjoyed it so much that I picked up this companion volume and I was not disappointed. Twenty-five true crime stories from the 1950s, focusing on the institutionalized offender. There are parolees on the prowl, continuing their rape and murder sprees, harden convicts busting out from the death chamber, and young punks starting their careers of crime and ending up in a state reform schools. If you are a crime buff, you will certainly enjoy this book.

Gritty and informative Mar 09, 2008
By Louis
The cons, lifers, p.c. punks, jailhouse lawyers, snitches, cellblock queens, inmates; all hustling for scraps, all scrapping for survival until that big day when freedom beckons. Whether it is in the form of a parole decree or a daring break-out, they will be free to repeat the abhorrent behavior that landed them in the clink in the first place. Like a shiv to the ribs, this book will penetrate your preconceived notions about life behind concrete walls.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Feb 27, 2008
By Peter My caption for this review is indeed the formula for David Jacobs' newest 50's crime anthology which explores the three kinds of criminal: the good (reform school girls, most of which are driven to meaningless sex, dope, and violence by abusive or missing parents), the bad (small time hustlers and penny ante crooks trapped in an endless cycle easy money, booze and crime), and the ugly (the incorrigibles: pedophiles, the insane, and the prison lifers - all of which live the chance to rape, kill, or bust out of the big house.) Convicts, Jail Birds and Reform School Girls is a great addition to what appears to be shaping up to be an excellent true crime book series. I can't wait till Hoodlums, Hopheads, and Hepcats: the Rogue Male of Fifties Crime comes out.

What ever you do, do not drop the soap! Mar 02, 2008
By Michael S. Convicts, Jail Birds and Reform School Girls is a wild ride through the most sensational and lurid true crime cases of the 1950s --- and a few before that. Many different crimes are covered but the outcomes are all the same: prison or death for the criminal and a deeply satisfying feeling for the reader.

Gritty, unrepentant and TRUE! Feb 13, 2008
By Jack You would not want to encounter any of the criminals in a dark alley at midnight or even a park at noon - nothing seems to motivate them but greed and lust. Law-abiding citizens have no place in their twisted reality, and these criminals have NO PLACE in our society - and that is why they are locked up.
From high society to the bottom of the criminal rung - these real-life killers, drug users and rapists got what they deserve behind 20-foot concrete walls in a cell they now call "home." A must have!!!
