We ain't in Kansas no more.... Feb 19, 2009
By Milosh This read blew me away. If a wonder bread kid like me from the burbs can be sucked in and truly feel for the characters, then I am sure I am in the prescence of great writing. Looking forward to sharing with friends who can handle the absolute raw nerve it is sure to hit. Nicely Done Swank Master!!!

Crackin' Up Feb 11, 2009
By Mark Hagen I picked up this book not knowing what I was going to expect. I understood from the first few pages the theme of the story, but I did not expect the trials and tribulations that the characters go through in order to come to life altering realizations. The story grabs you quick and gets you involved in everyday lives of the characters and their struggle to find/earn their place in a world that ignores you. As you progress into the book you understand the plight and the choices they've made. Wishing they could turn back time and return to where their path had diverged, so they can choose the other path. It also hits on hard issues of our everyday society, and the mindsets that people turn to when frustrated about their situation. I enjoyed reading this book, and would encourage others to give it a try.

By P. Dewey Crackin' Up Crackin' up is an amazing read! Living life inside the so called status quo makes this writing come to life. I could not put the book down as real life situations unfolded, people, places and times that I could relate to. Crackin' up is about the real world of professionals, politicians, doctors, lawyers, judges, officers of law,the Mommies,Daddies, young bloods, the so called Pimps,Players,Hustlers and Hoes. The book takes you on a path in life that at first seems carefree and bright but ends in a place that maybe familiar even to you, the reader.
Don't fool yourself, YES, you do know somebody that is Crackin' Up!
Is it you?

Crackin' Up Jan 16, 2009
By Nicky Every once in a while I read a book that is so intensely raw, unforgiving and brutally evocative in the treatment of the subject matter that my mind refuses to accept the fact that the story could be true; sure, names are changed, details rearranged in order to engage the reader and maintain the continuity of the story, but for all that, the story portrays real people, real situations and real consequences. Only an author who had once been an intimate part of such a culture and lifestyle could bring us the story of "Crackin' Up".
I can say for a fact I would never have given it even a cursory look if it hadn't been recommended to me by a fellow book-hound, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I will also admit, starting it can be a bit challenging since it jumps you into the middle of "Crackin' Up's" world, no holds barred, but you quickly become engaged with the characters and in no time at all you are hearing the `street talk' and cadences in your head just like you would on the street or in the subway or on the bus. The Swankmaster has also crafted in-your-face visuals, describing apartments and neighborhoods down to small details that reinforce his (?) intimacy with them.
I think what I found the most compelling and grabbing portions of the book are the internal dialogues the characters have with both themselves and with others. At several different times, that conversation is at such odds with their external actions and personas that it almost made me want to reach out and smack some sense into their collective heads. But this is what the author wants us to do; hear, see and feel that portion of your world, city, neighborhood that you just walk or drive past, never noticing; looking only straight ahead, hoping against hope that they won't notice you.
Everyone has a story, and everyone deserves a voice, one that is not defined by the local news, or police reports, or the statistics of addiction and violence. `Crackin' Up' speaks for itself.
