Reconciling with our past... Feb 07, 2010
By New Father I will gladly say up front that I am a biased reader. My grandmother wrote this book, and I love it. In this her first novel, Lorraine Esala tells the story of Elsa, a Finnish girl orphaned at age three who ends up being raised by adoptive parents in Canada. As an adult, Elsa returns to Finland to learn of her roots. The reader is taken on Elsa's journey and learns little know Finnish history. In reconciling with her past, Elsa is able to embrace her future. This is a warm tale of family, faith and forgiveness. The novel admirably appreciates cultural roots without idolizing them. It teaches without boring, theologizes without being preachy, and may cause you to shed a tear before its over--I did.

A beautiful stroy about family love Nov 29, 2009
By Timothy M. Esala
"Tim"
This story is beautifully woven into the fabric of twentieth-century Finnish history. The Finnish people stood up to the Russians with little support from other nations. This cost them much from the loss of land to the personal losses endured by families. This lovely story is set in that troubled time and extends to today showing how love can conquer hardship.

A well written and engaging story Jan 04, 2010
By Bruce Jolly I found myself quickly drawn into both the personalities of the book and the history of the Finnish people. This author's first published work is a well crafted, quick read and I would highly recommend it, even to a non-Finn like myself.
