Cusco: The Gateway to Inner Wisdom

Cusco: The Gateway to Inner Wisdom is the story of one woman's journey from theatrical producer in New York, to outreach minister in South Africa, to initiate of the Andean spiritual tradition in Peru. Her story has import and meaning in this time of transition, as many people search for understanding. The questions, answers and exercises at the end of each chapter offer a practical guide on the Andean path. Diane Dunn has been a spiritual seeker since childhood, and it was this relentless quest for deeper understanding and love that led her through a circuitous, magical adventure into the land of the Inkas, where she met two powerful Andean Masters who taught her to know and live in a new way. In sharing her adventure and the teachings of the Andean Spiritual tradition, she invites readers to discover their own wisdom, power and purpose; to tap into the never-ending source of universal love that can transform their lives.

5Uplifting, Very Engaging, Compelling, Inspirational and Excellent book  May 21, 2010
By marisa
This book is full of insights, and is a truly inspirational and down to earth book. What touched me most were the stories and experiences Diane Dunn shares. She captivates me with her personal encounters with people she met along the way in her path to spirituality and healing. I would love to meet Regis and Sergio and experience the moments of mystic synchronicity. You'll walk away with powerful stories etched into your mind. Diane Dunn managed to tell her story in such a way that the reader is invited to share in that experience. We should all learn something from this book. One should not just read, think and speak but ACT. CUSCO reminds me of Stephen Covey's book " The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change" that first we have to change ourselves and only then we can change others and the world.
Diane's thoughtful examination of service among those who are poor (her time living in South Africa) defines the paradigm shift that must occur in our spirituality. A shift marked by a broadened expression and experience of spirituality in the midst of a suffering country. She urges us away from our common limited perspective of serving the poor toward a new life giving reality rich in relationship and one's own level of consciousness and spirituality. I really liked Diane Dunn's own story because it made me see how much we are all seekers on a path (higher consciousness or spiritual). I was really struck by the simplicity of doing that and thought to myself -" I can do that, too". Diane talked about things she did to keep herself on track that were simple but took some thought and reading them inspired me even more. The way she talks about her ups and downs and challenges along the way makes the rest of us seem even more real. It was very encouraging. Diane is honest with herself and invites the reader to be honest with themselves as well. At times I found the book challenging causing me to re-think what the spiritual life is like. This is one of those books that can be read again and again because its lessons are one that we all struggle with and can continually grow in. This is a thinking person's book. If you care and hurt about the way things ought to be, this book will comfort and encourage you. Likewise, this book is not for someone looking for a quick how to formula but for the patient and persistent reader willing to take the time and energy. After all there is profit to be gained. I can only read one chapter at a time and always find myself re-reading that chapter several times before going to the next.
CUSCO speaks in very simple terms and translates ancient Andean and Shaman spiritual traditions into simple terms for the average reader looking into a new approach to healing and spirituality. It is so great that Diane shared with her readers the Andean leaders' knowledge on how we can live in harmony with Mother Earth (Diane wrote a lot about the four elements). The Inka or Andean spirituality have much to offer us. I can't help but be reminded of what the Dalai Lama also stated in most of his books wherein he reminds us to spend a few minutes a day devoted to engaging in the practices and contemplating their significance will go a long way towards bringing compassion and ultimately a sense of inner peace into your everyday life.
This book is important in describing to me and helping me to understand that my life has been and continues to be a spiritual journey. It will be a source of strength and encouragement among those who are serious about their search for spirituality. It is not always an easy read, sometimes you have to suspend your judgment for a few pages but it is a remarkable book. It has lots of information as Diane Dunn shares with the readers many of the teachings and knowledge of the Andean leaders and Shamans. Likewise, if you are one of those people who is longing for some kind of spiritual connection or a more peaceful place inside yourself and you just don't know where to begin, read this book. Diane's CUSCO convinced me that spirituality is something people should seek and embrace. The real bottom line is if you are on a path or thinking about learning more about ways of exploring spirituality and self growth, this intelligent and wide ranging book has an undeniable appeal to anyone with the yearning to understand more deeply the nature of spirituality. This book is not a read, it is an experience. It is filled with the author's stories of her own spiritual journey and these stories have stayed with me for weeks now. This book jumped to the top shelf of my all-time favorites.
In my opinion, by far the most valuable gift of this book is the valuable perspective of an incredibly wise and spiritual woman. The author's approach seeks wisdom which includes compassion and love. As Diane Dunn said in her book - "The taripaypacha is close at hand, the time of meeting our true selves again. Step through the gateway now". I am on my way to Cusco, Peru in August 2010. And am also very excited to meet and spend time with Diane. Looking forward to visit the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. I have this feeling that a lot of my questions that I always had and longed for answers will be answered in Peru. CUSCO is a real inspiration!

3Some good information  Nov 05, 2011

If you like to read of others adventures, rather than making your own, then you will find the writing style to be generally good though not engrossing. There is some good information in here if you are interested in Andean mysticism or mysticism in general. However the information around the mesa is not complete and there are important points missing.

Yes there are some exercises in this book. Those may be good for someone new to mysticism. But there is no substitute with going to the Andes and studying with a master teacher directly. If you are really drawn to Peru, GO ALREADY !!! I've been there twice and to Bolivia and these trips were life changing.

I really could not tell from the book what the authors core expertise was, her philosphy, or the core message in this book beyond some adventures and some exercises.

I thought that this book Initiation: A Woman's Spiritual Adventure in the Heart of the Andes at least within a similar genre of adventure tales, if you are into that, had more real information about places that you would want to go in Peru.

If you want a solid book from someone who lives in the culture 24x7 then this is the best book out there today Andean Awakening: An Inca Guide to Mystical Peru.

Then you also have other books which you need in order to complete your Andean mysticism survey such as (in this order):
- Gate of Paradise: Secrets of Andean Shamanism
- Masters of the Living Energy: The Mystical World of the Q'ero of Peru
- Initiation: A Woman's Spiritual Adventure in the Heart of the Andes

5Insightful, Beautiful and inspiring  Jul 21, 2010

I bought this book after reading the book reviews recently posted. This was brought about when a co-worker sent me this email she received from another person and also from another person. My friend knew that I am on my spiritual path (aren't we all?). Diane Dunn has given me an insight into the nature of our world and our place in society. I read this book more than once and I still find myself reading some chapters every now and then. Diane succeeds in awakening your senses. And every time I can't help but reflect on my own life and being on a particular path that is exactly the right one for me at this time of my life. I wish I got hold of this book sooner as I would have loved to travel to Cusco, Peru this summer. I encourage people to read CUSCO by Diane Dunn and go the author's website - [...]. 11/11/11 seems like a time I would love to visit Cusco and meet the author. Would like for the reviewer named Marisa to post a comment when she comes back from her Cusco trip. I believe she mentioned that she has plans to be there this August. WOW

5Pure delight and very powerful  Jul 19, 2010

Cusco the book is indeed an amazing experience to read. I saw this book at a friend's house. I read the beginning pages and found myself in one corner of the house and reading the whole book. I knew I had to get hold of a copy for myself and ended up buying one. Though I've read many other books such as Don Goewey's Mystic Cool and my all time favorite book by Stephen Covey - The 7 Habits of ..... The book CUSCO indeed opened my eyes to the life I currently live and lead and the interaction between myself and the world. The author's own spiritual journey and the time spent in immersing herself in experiencing the world is just as paramount to her spiritual ascent and ultimately finding her own peace and that elusive inner peace or bliss. I truly enjoyed every chapter of CUSCO. It makes one want to visit Cusco, Peru. Maybe I might just do that. I believe there is one book reviewer who is visiting Cusco this summer (I enjoyed reading her book review). I'm simply jealous that she'll get to have this once in a lifetime experience with the author. I just LOVE this amazing book. A MUST read book for anyone on a spiritual journey. Like me you might also have that urge to travel to Cusco, Peru. Well, maybe I will and treat myself to a trip of a lifetime. P.S. I also enjoyed reading the book reviews so far. They are all very helpful.

5Life affirming!  Sep 16, 2009

I sat down at 6:41pm to start reading "Cusco: The Gateway to Inner Wisdom" and did not put it down until 11:30pm after I read the last page! It was absolutely beautiful. Words really can't explain the experience I had while reading this book. It was so powerful I would start to shake while reading certain parts. I can't thank Diane enough for sharing her life. This book is a true treasure!
