Dad's Home Alone: Caring For Your Elderly Parent

We are a country with a fast-growing elderly population. How can we provide the care required when our parents are elderly and wish to remain independent and in their home? In Gail Alcorn McGonigle’s indispensable book, Dad’s Home Alone: Caring for Your Elderly Parent, the former occupational therapist-and someone who cared for an aging father-we learn about how an elder’s needs might develop chronologically-from being independent, through death and its aftermath-and how we can best intervene in the various stages, providing the care necessary to maintain their health, safety, and sense of self-respect. She covers the gamut from devices that make daily activities easier and safer, to costs and coverage, to revelations about abuses. The Tips and Tools at the end of each chapter help to make this a necessary guide for everyone engaged in caring for an aging parent. In conclusion, the section on “When It’s Our Turn,” gives us food for thought as we prepare for our own elder years.

5Essential reading if you have an elderly parent or if you plan to ever get old!  Feb 14, 2010
By Helen
This is a wonderful, easy to read, extremely informative book about caring for an elderly parent, or any loved one, whose increasing age makes it necessary to have assistance in order to live relatively independently. It is also relevant to one's own growing old and the decisions one may make in planning for old age. The author relates her own experience with her father who, after being widowed, needed to have an increasing amount of assistance in order to continue to live in his home. How to provide that help with creative planning, regard for his wishes, respect for his proud nature behind the face of age and disability, and good humor is the crux of the book. Although none of us wants to face these issues, we all do at some point. This book provides so many practical suggestions and gives support to the reader at the same time. I really recommend it as a guidebook to keep and reference in years to come.

5Dad doesn't need to be alone!  Feb 03, 2010
By Demanding Reader
After finishing this book I am absolutely floored by the amount of information and detail the author has included. There were many 'aha' and 'I wouldn't have thought of that' moments - she must have done loads of research. What a great tool, and I love the way the author wove her dad's story around the data, personalizing it so well. It works for those caring for aging family members and helps all of us to plan for our own declining years. Highly recommended!
