Dark River

Greed, lust, murder, and a love that will outlive the river itself. . . "Are you his forever? The river will tell." These chilling words will change Isabelle Fontaine's destiny. A celebrated Canadian pianist, she inherits historic Fontaine, the last French ribbon estate of the 1700s. Crossing the Detroit River to claim the house, Isabelle finds herself in a fight for her sanity. Isabelle learns that she bears an uncanny resemblance to Celeste, her great-grandmother. Ensnared by visions of a doomed love affair between Celeste and a man named Jacques, Isabelle relives the tragedy: Celeste was a captive of the sadistic Louis Fontaine, and some souls were damned in the process. Bewildered, Isabelle outruns not only her past, but also her future. On the eve of Detroit's transformation into a world-class city, newcomer Isabelle learns she is a pawn in one of the greatest riverfront scandals in American history. Cornered at every turn, Isabelle is aided by two great men, the ambitious entrepreneur Douglas, and the bitter physician, Michael. Isabelle's heart must make a choice, but the ethereal Jacques, whose dark love calls to her from the river's bottom, has already claimed her soul. As Isabelle struggles to survive, a 100 year-old tragedy threatens to repeat itself. Jacques is coming for her. And he plans to take her home.

4Strange things hide in the darkness  Dec 09, 2007
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Isabelle, a well-known Canadian pianist, learns that her grandfather died and left a house in Detroit to her. She goes there with every intention of selling it. When she meets Josie, the cook and caretaker, who hints at strange goings-on in the house, she notices her bad dreams accelerate and she even begins to see a strange man in the yard. Frequently she hears voices and music from the ballroom but when she opens the door, no one is there. Douglas, a Canadian who has helped her with her music career, follows her to Detroit, bent on getting her to marry him. He is interested in a few business deals there also. Meanwhile, she meets Josie's nephew, Michael, a doctor who doesn't think much of Douglas and shows it. Isabelle is attracted to both men and finds herself in a quandary. Should she marry Douglas?

As she learns more about her family, the less she wants to sell and run. She discovers, through drawings by her mentally impaired cousin, that she looks very much like her great grandmother Celeste. A slave named Jacques enters the picture; he is in love with Celeste and he sees Isabelle as Celeste. How can Isabelle let him know Celeste is dead, just as he is?

DARK RIVER by Heather Buchanan is a very intriguing mystery that dips in and out of Detroit's history. It gives information about how slaves and freedmen were treated, as well as how truly mixed, by blood, the whites and the blacks actually were. It is obvious that much research was done. The writing is superb and the characters invite you into their lives. It was a very good read.

5A suspenseful Tale of Love and Deceit  Mar 26, 2007
By Sylvia M. Hubbard "AA Suspense/Intrigue Romance/Erotic Author Extraordinaire"
In the early 1800's of Detroit, Isabelle comes from Canada because she inherited an estate built in the 1700's. She's a descendant from one of the first French families in Detroit.

As she learns about her past and her how her great grandmother was a captive of Louis Fontaine, she also falls in love with two successful men, all while becoming a pawn in the largest riverfront scandal in American history.

Dark River combined real Detroit history romance suspense and paranormal in a tale that will draw you in, educate you about this great city's past and keep you on the edge of your seat. Ten years of research by this author really pays off and Heather Buchanan did a great job in making sure you received the best of the best by giving you her best!

4History, Romance, Suspense, Oh My!  Dec 16, 2006
By Sylvia McClain
Take a little Black history, add some romance, and sprinkle it with a dash of suspense and you've got an inheritance riddle with intrigue. Dark River is a story of love that is handed down from one beautiful slave to her freeborn great-grand daughter. Isabelle was destined to be born in order to free Celeste and her lover's souls from captivity.

If you have a passion for reading about true love affairs, this is the book for you. Lovers of the past are entwined with new generation lovers in order to set their souls free from the river. Not being a romance novel reader, I read this one in only four hours and it was worth every minute.
