Davey BigHead: Dream Big

A lighthearted romp of a children’s tale, Davey Bighead, Dream Big introduces a wildly fun and altogether fascinating character in children’s literature. Author and illustrator Peter J. Hayden creates an inspiring, lovable, and completely unforgettable kid whose name is Davey, also known as Davey Bighead. While some children have their heads in the clouds, by the title one might guess that Davey’s head is as round and big as one. Barely able to fit his noggin through a school bus door or even through the neck of his own tee shirt, Davey knows his head is larger than average. Admittedly, Davey has a head bigger than a watermelon, which his classmates poke fun at him for until they learn that when it comes to being the winning goalie on a winning soccer team, a big head comes in handy. Go Davey Bighead! Written for beginning and intermediate readers, this fable is certain to become a classic tale of embracing and celebrating individuality.

5`Today was the first day of school, ..'  Aug 21, 2009
By J. Cameron-Smith "Expect the Unexpected"
Davey Bighead is a delightful story both for children who are beginning to read, and those who are reading with them. Davey is starting school, and his enormously big head is causing him some problems. In this story, Davey finds a way to make this difference an advantage. I think that many children can relate to this story about difference, and will be delighted by Davey's success.

Davey Bighead is the kind of character who will appeal to many young children. The illustrations are vibrant, and Davey's sparkling big blue eyes make him come alive.

Davey Bighead is a new character, and this is his first book. Enjoy it.

5Davey Big Head scores major points!!  Aug 15, 2009
By N. Wimmert "Nix"
I received this book today and it is definitely a keeper. It's about a child named "Davey" who was born with a big head. Davey is made fun of by all the other kids and faces challenges everyday. It isn't until Davey learns to embrace his challenge that his unique head becomes his best asset. Davey uses his big head to play goalie for his school's soccer team.

This book teaches children about uniqueness and how to embraces others that are different. The book has superb illustrations and a great message. It is short yet to the point so children will not get bored sitting through the story. It captures your attention and teaches a great lesson.

I rate "Davey Big Head" five stars and would love to read more by this author. My 1 year old son loved it!

5A Homerun!  Aug 03, 2009
By Charles Evans "Call me Kevin"
Davey Bighead is story for all types of kids. It tells the tale of a young man who doesn't quite fit in and is painfully aware of his difference. However, Davey figures out a way (on his own... no adult suggestion was needed) to capitalize on his difference and learn that we all have special gifts. In many ways, "Davey Bighead" is a non-Christmas version of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" - Don't get me wrong "Davey Bighead" is completely original, but it does encompass a similar theme.

The story is well-written and would be enjoyed by children 3 and up - and can be read by an advanced 2nd grader (in my opinion). The illustrations are very good and will definitely add enjoyment to the kids who haven't quite mastered reading. The illustrations are cute and quirky and will bring smiles to readers of all ages.

Final Verdict - My personal belief is that little boys will enjoy "Davey Bighead" a little more than girls (due to its sports oriented theme), but I also believe that it is an excellent choice for parents everywhere.

5 Stars

5Bridget's Review  Aug 03, 2009
By bridget3420 "Bridget Hopper"
I received an adorable children's book today called Davey Big Head: Dream Big by Peter J. Hayden. This is the story of Davey, a child who has an enormous head. Every time he tries to make friends he is made fun of because of his gigantic head. Davey tries to play games with the other kids at recess but his big head always gets in the way. Davey becomes discouraged until one night, unable to sleep, he has a brilliant idea. He can't wait to get to school the next day because he has finally figured out what he can do and his big head will be an advantage. Davey decides to join the soccer team as goalie. He is finally able to be proud of his big head because he is able to keep the other team from scoring.

This is a great book for kids. It teaches that people who are a little different than you have feelings too. It also teaches kids not to dwell on what keeps them from making friends, but to embrace it and figure out a way to make it an asset.

I recommend this to all of you moms, dads, aunts, uncles, etc. I just finished reading it to my nephew a little bit ago and it was a hit. There are lots of bright colors and beautiful pictures.

5Every youngster has something special about them, but sometimes what appears to be a liability can actually be an asset!  Aug 03, 2009
By D. Fowler "Dragonfly77"
Poor Davey had a teary-eyed look on his face. It was the first day of school and he didn't want to go because he knew everyone would make fun of him. He just wanted to stay in bed all day and never, ever get up. He had a big head, but not because he was conceited or anything like that, but because it really was BIG. He finally got up to get ready for school. He had trouble getting his shirt over his head and when he was getting ready to step into the bus everyone laughed because his "head was simply too big, and he was stuck." WAAAAAAH!

Things didn't seem to get much better and pretty soon the other kids were teasing him and nicknamed him "Davey Big Head." Even in gym class his big old head was a problem. Try as he might, he simply could not get the head out of the way of a dodge ball. WHAM! WHACK! POW! Lying in bed that night Davey had an idea. Instead of getting discouraged he was the kind of boy that wouldn't let things get to him. If his head was big, he would think BIG! He was going to play soccer. Do you think a kid like him could make the cut?

Every youngster has something special about them, but sometimes what appears to be a liability can actually be an asset given the right circumstances. Children need to learn to think outside of the box and this book can make them think about their own possibilities and will encourage them to believe in themselves. The dialogue is simple, but the message strong. The art work is charming and wide-eyed Davey is very appealing. This also has the underlying theme of bullying which makes this an excellent read and discuss book for the homeschool and classroom setting.
