Could you survive the rising Dead Tide? Jun 18, 2010
By Colleen Wanglund DEAD TIDE
By Stephen A. North
(Library of the Living Dead Press 2009)
In St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park, Florida the dead have begun to rise with only one goal....to feed on the living. Sitting on a small peninsula with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and Tampa Bay on the other, there are few options for evacuation in the event of an emergency. This is one emergency that no one has prepared for. There is no warning and there is no plan. Who will survive the zombie apocalypse?
With the story taking place over twenty-four hours, we are introduced to many characters quickly, but effectively. Nick Talaski, the hard-nosed cop with his friend Matt Keller on a ride-along; James Dodd, a cop who probably got lucky when he graduated from the academy, and seems to have a bit of a mean-streak; Trish, a stripper who doesn't like to let anyone get too close; Mills, a firefighter and the only rescue worker left alive at the Mall; Bronte and Tracks who seemed to be up to no good when it all started; and the Mayor who has organized a group of VIPs that he has deemed worthy of evacuation to the safety of a cruise ship in the Bay. Dodd turns out to have a few screws loose and hooks up with some shady people, while Mills risks his life to go into the Mall alone to look for survivors. Trish manages to find some good people while Talaski and Keller end up on the wrong side of an ambush. What I liked most about DEAD TIDE was that it focused more on the living than the dead. The zombies are driven solely by hunger, but the living, even during a life-threatening crisis, are still driven by their own selfishness and what they can potentially gain. I also liked that the story is all local. There are one or two references to news reports from outside these two cities, but the sphere of the action is kept small. There's also a major surprise in store when the government finally seems to get its act together and send in some troops.
This is a great story that any zombie fan will love. There were quite a few surprises throughout, which is always good.....who likes predictability? Stephen doesn't give too much away because there is a sequel coming....which I am really looking forward to. I recommend DEAD TIDE to any horror fan.

An enjoyable zombie adventure story Nov 23, 2009

Overall, I enjoyed this novel. The pace of this novel was fast and the dialogue is believable. There was a mix of likable and unpleasant characters, some romance, plenty of entanglements with zombies and bad guys, and tension all the way through. My only gripe, really, is that the way the novel is structured (swapping between characters each chapter)required me to do some mental backtracking every few minutes to remember where each character had left off.

Great Read! Nov 11, 2008
By Shannon Jones I couldn't put it down. The characters were deep and interesting. The story line was fascinating. And the writing was fast paced and grabbed my attention. In addition, the premise was believeable. If you love zombies you need to get this book.

Dead Tide, buy this book and read it NOW! Nov 04, 2008
By Terrence Patrick Rooney So I got in this first book from the Library of the Living Dead Press and was instantly delighted at how many pages there were. Its a heavy book to be sure and it is chock full of one of the most powerful zombie novels I have ever read.
Mr. North presents to us the start of a normal day which all goes to hell fairly quickly and as it spirals down into darkness we get focused on the beginning of the end. His style of writing brings you into the scene with shocking clarity, your drawn into the the scenes and you suffer as these characters do. You find out that even at the end of all things, greed and corruption still find a way to assert themselves and rule over even the imperiled and often dark hearts of men and women.
You find yourself disgusted with the actions of some of the characters and you will wish them dead. It a mental overload, its brilliant and its shocking in its reality. Because no matter how we have lived our lives, no matter how good we have tried to be to those around us. Deep inside we all know that the potential is there, the dark and evil side of humanity, not just in others but in ourselves. At the beginning of a situation like this the good will stand firm, strong in their belief in the decency of men and holding on against the slick easy slide down into the darkness of chaos, madness and death.
In this morally trying situation, the characters try to survive against hordes of undead shambling along pulling down and devouring any who cross their path. As the death toll rises and the horde grown stronger, our characters try to organize themselves, try to figure out some way to live on.
I would say if you have ever been a fan of survival horror games, if you have ever watched zombie movies and if you have ever enjoyed a well written romp on the edge of hell, then this book is a must read.
For those of you who doubt me let me leave you with one compelling reason to buy this book. Its amazing.
Thank you Stephen North, I loved it and I know anyone who reads will too.

The zombie apocalypse is here in a fast paced book from Stephen North. Multiple characters try and survive the zombie seige of their town, somehow it all comes to a head in the end. But wait its not the end! The sequel is out already! Great read, interesting characters and end to end action. I am currently working on the next one and its just as good. The most awesome points of Stephen's work is his ability to juggle many, many characters and make them all very unique and the non stop action all coming together for a well paced book. Great stuff!
