Ruined my vacation Dec 01, 2009
By RAL in the West Okay, here's what I want to say about "Depth of Deceit." It spoiled my vacation! It came in the mail just before we were leaving on a whirlwind four-day trip to find ancient Anasazi ruins. Having read Betty's other books, I took it and did not take any backup book: that's how much I trust this author, to not bother with any backup. Well, I pretty much ignored my spouse on this trip and grudgingly stopped reading when I had to go off on hikes to fulfill our purpose. On the second day, after spending the morning hiking into the wilderness and finally returning to the truck, my spouse discovered he'd lost his hat somewhere. Well, he really likes that hat, so he said he was going to go back down the trail and search for it. He said, "I hope I'll be back in an hour or so." I worked hard to hide my glee. For an entire precious hour, I was able to sit alone in the truck and READ, uninterrupted.
I never once experienced even an instant of boredom or impatience. I wanted to turn those pages. Who was the good guy? Who was the bad guy? She kept me guessing throughout. I finished it yesterday and was completely satisfied. Wonderful read!
Depth of Deceit - How Deep Is It? Apr 07, 2011
By Cheryl C. A young attorney struggling to prove she has so much more going on for her than her "prom queen" looks, Stephanie Saunders has the unpleasant task of accepting the dregs of society appointed as her clients by the judge. So why does she find herself attracted to one of these unsavory men when she has a boyfriend she loves? Her career is starting to take off and she seems to "have made it" when everything changes. Her consolation is found with the horse she is training. With the horses she finds her true nature, even as someone seems to be following her. Who is Josh Durrant, anyway, and why does he seem to be around every corner?
As the story grew and the plot thickened, I was enthralled. Betty Briggs tells a wonderfully engaging story. I was constantly guessing about the bad guys and the good guys in this tale of suspense. Just when I thought I could see what was coming next, the tale would twist in another direction. I truly enjoyed watching Stephanie grow as she faced her mounting struggles and faced danger the best way she knew, not knowing who she could trust, including herself. Thoroughly clean reading, this was a great thriller. I enjoyed the life lessons taught through Stephanie's care and love of horses.
As I finished reading the book, all I could think about - beyond the story - was what a great writer Betty is. I enjoy her style and tempo. She uses personal experience to spice up the storyline without intruding as the author. She intuitively knows how much detail to include and where to draw the line for a clean read that is still engaging and real. Now I need to go back and read her four previous books. I am a definite fan! See my review on my website AGoodDayToRead [dot] com.

Depth of Deceit by Betty Briggs
In this riveting thriller with a backdrop with horses in the storyline, comes young and aspiring Defense Attorney Stephanie Saunders who is given the dregs of society as clients. Her first client happens to be Josh Durrant, who seems to be following her whereever she goes. She also is a little wary of her boyfriend Todd Saxton, who's always calling her "Prom Queen" like her peers do.
While trying to establish her credibility as a Defense Attorney, she is worried and confused at someone's stealing her innocence. Stephanie goes to a doctor and finds she is mysteriously pregnant and not knowing how that came to be, as she is not one to sleep around. When she finds out how she did get pregnant, she's wanting to give her baby away.
Amidst all this, Stephanie finds time for caring and riding her favorite gelding Kingston and nursing Riskie Business and her foal back to health with the help of Josh and the local veternarian.
When she finds someone is in the baby selling racket, knowing that someone is trying to sell her unborn baby, she fights for all she's worth to protect her baby. The twists and turns in the page-turner leave you wanting more. I highly recommend this heart-stopping novel to everyone and there is a sequel in the works.

An entertaining novel of establishing oneself as a professional, recommended Feb 09, 2010
By Midwest Book Review All too often people think beauty and brains are mutually exclusive. "Depth of Deceit" is the tale of Stephanie Saunders as she cuts through the legal webs of deception, as everyone seems out to disprove her worth as an attorney, even her so called boyfriend. Finding comfort only in her love for horses, she must establish herself as not just some floozy to be pushed around. "Depth of Deceit" is an entertaining novel of establishing oneself as a professional, recommended.
Wonderful Book, everyone should read! Nov 04, 2009
By Chris Mcneill Betty Briggs outdid herself on this book, she really showed what real writing is about. This fifth book was wonderful and interesting to read, it kept you on your toes the whole time. Stephanie is a character that everyone wants to be has a great boyfriend, a job at a successful law firm, and even gets to train horses for people. Until a car crash changes everything and her life dosn't seem so wonderful anymore. Betty will put you in awe in how she encorperates the characters from her previous books into this one. She will amaze on who you will meet, you might even recognize him. You will enjoy this book, and will love the way Betty encorperates all the twists and turns into this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great read.
