Riveting and fast paced! Nov 10, 2008
By c sohn Destroyermen is a fascinating account of life aboard a destroyer in the 50's at the brink of the Cold War. The main character is a likeable young midwestern young man who finds himself catapulted into the limelight as an officer and unsuspecting leader of a destroyer caught in the middle of cold war maneuvering by both U.S. politicians and their Russian counterparts as the struggle for power develops in the Suez Canal. The author vividly describes life aboard a "tin can", the humble warship of the fleet whose purpose is to protect at all costs. The circumstances of the conflicts are so realistic that one has to wonder if there is some truth to the story. This is a must read for all Navy men and women as well as for those who love the triumph of the underdog. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Couldn't put it down!!! Mar 06, 2009
By J. Dean Richard Tennent's new book about a young naval officer's adventures during the Suez Canal crisis of 1956 makes for incredibly compelling reading. With a Clancy-esque technique, he weaves shipboard technical detail (Tennent himself served as a naval officer during the Suez crisis) with tense Cold War intrigue. The book's hero, LTJG Jim Taylor, struggles with courage and character to overcome Navy politics, corrupt Eritrean warlords, monster ocean storms AND the Russian navy. Especially realistic are several vivid combat passages and, quite frankly, I was emotionally exhausted after reading each. Sequel?? Prequel?? Bring it!!

Destroyer life remembered Jan 24, 2009
By J. Donald Belleville I served on board the same ship Dick Tennent served on in 1956. Therefore, I am familiar with the cruise that is described in the book. The places he mentions brought back fond memories of my navy days. Dick did a very good job capturing life on board a destroyer. The development of characters made me feel like I knew them. I could imagine myself as part of the book's crew sitting at the sonar console pinging for submarines. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. This is a first novel and it is well done. I hope to see more from this author.

The Cold War as You Never Knew It Dec 16, 2008
By Edward C. Hanpeter I highly recommend "Destroyermen--Three Minutes To War," especially for anyone who has served in the Navy or who would enjoy a well-crafted yarn of life on (and off) a U.S. destroyer in the 1950's. Highlights include a stomach-churning description of the ship fighting through a monumental storm on the North Atlantic with a near capsizing, and an encounter with a Soviet submarine in the Mediterranean as the U.S. and the Soviet Union maneuver to influence events arising from Egypt's seizure of the Suez Canal. Destroyermen also go ashore, but not on leave.

Engrossing Dec 08, 2008
By Joseph Gormley The tie-ins to historical facts makes this book seem like history. The attention paid to ship-board technology (very thorough; very accurate; amazing)and the story-telling skills of the author make you hope that this becomes a motion picture. Worth reading twice.
