Domain of the Scorpion

Robert Bruce Drynan’s Domain of the Scorpion is a pulse-pounding thriller set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War at its peak, narcotics trafficking, and Marxist guerrilla activities in Columbia and Venezuela. When battle scarred ex-marine Ryan Haggarty meets Anne, a schoolteacher, he never expects the two will soon be involved in deadly intrigue. Haggarty and Anne are unaware that they possess knowledge that could expose a merger between a Columbia drug cartel and Marxist insurgents, and that the Scorpion, a shadowy figure who runs the cartel, wants them eliminated. A deadly cat and mouse game ensues, with the police, military, Communist guerrillas, and the Scorpion hot on their trail. When the Scorpion takes Anne hostage, Haggarty must battle his own demons, along with this human one, to save the woman he loves. A thinking person’s thriller, Domain of the Scorpion is both a moving love story and an incisive look at political intrigue.

This is an engaging and well-spun story. Drynan clearly knows the setting well and transports the reader into the story through cultural and topographical detail. The characters are well developed and believable. It's a great first offering from Drynan; I'm looking forward to the next one.

I read this book first of Robert Drynan's, then I read his new book "What Price Liberty". Both books were page turners and must read every word. I couldn't put them down and am waiting for the next book.
