Drug Dealers, Stalkers, and Romance Dec 14, 2008
By Richard R. Blake Angry, devastated, and pregnant Carlene Ledbetter left the security of her sister's home in Kentucky to find haven with her Aunt Vi in Florida to rebuild a new life for herself and her unborn child.
From the first sentence of chapter one right through to the surprise climactic ending in the final chapter, author Joyce Brennan had me hooked in her book "Don't Dance on My Heart."
A twist of fate brings Carlene Ledbetter and John Santos together. Neither Carlene nor John is looking for a relationship. Carlene is embittered and insecure, afraid to give her heart to another man. John recognized the dangers of his career do not lend themselves to love, marriage and family.
Fast paced intrigue, embezzlement, muggings, a stalker, and under cover police detectives keep the reader guessing as Brennan weaves her way through intricate plot twists, balancing romance, danger, secret offices, coded phone messages, and vindictive characters.
Brennan carefully builds her plot and establishes strong characters. Much of the plot is carried forward through believable dialog and her genuine characters. I was left with an indelible sense of empathy for the protagonists.
The fast action, stimulating dialog, and colorful characters make "Don't Dance on My Heart" a book which can easily be adapted for a movie script. Joyce Brennan keeps getting better. I am eagerly looking forward to another of her books in the near future.
