Not Exactly a Reverse D-Day Plot Apr 06, 2011
By David Island
"Excalibur"
"Double Double" by Michael Franks is a creative attempt at portraying what would have been a short-lived but nonetheless bad P.R. and dispiriting invasion of England by the Nazis on D-Day, 1944.
Its main problems are the too-many coincidental events that either save or doom various characters. Too much happens by chance, and thus the plot is rendered basically unbelievable. Further, there are too many unexplained events, where the action simply shifts to another location dragging the reader, somewhat perplexed, along by the author. While the plot as a whole was a good concept, it is, on one hand, way too complicated and populated by too many people. On the other hand, it is too simple. These are not self-contradictory -- merely a result of bad execution of a good idea. Once again we read about incompetence and ineffectual handling of spies, moles, and double-double spies -- turning a spy into an agent against his original handlers. It's really a wonder that any espionage during World War II actually resulted in useful information for either side.
There are too many plot gaps and too many unexplained scenarios. The characters, while real in appearance and talk become less and less believable. The end is wholly unconvincing, as one is led to believe that the main French woman character somehow is real. I didn't believe that for a minute. Finally, the author relies on pathetic, stereotyped and shopworn characterizations of homosexuality in his portrayal of one of the main characters. Pity that. I found only one or two characters likable and honestly believable.
For cleverness it's a 4. In its execution its barely a 2. Thus, to be generous, I think it rates a 3 overall on Amazon's scale.

fun read Apr 11, 2011
By Beth Beggs I too, enjoyed this action filled novel. As a history buff, it was fun to think of this plot, and the courage of the women of the war. Good read.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The story line is very interesting and believable. It is so engrossing that when my husband leaned over to speak to me on the beach, I jumped! I am recommending this intriguing novel to all my friends.
Disappointed Jul 14, 2011
By MrsMc I was disappointed in the book. It seemed as if it was written by 2 people. The end was abrupt and seemed incomplete. Had I had an idea, I do not believe I would have purchased.
