Excellent Book Dec 15, 2008
By E. Tosh Have you ever wondered what swimming the channel would be like and what type of preparation was necessary for such a swim. Well wonder no more.
This is a well written, very easy to read book. The author does not get bogged down in describing in intimate detail her workouts or the tiny details of this or that. She paints with a broad brush when it comes to the more mundane day in and day out hours and hours of training. But brings in to sharp focus the true hurdles and milestones of this endeavour.
If you're not interested in swimming this book probably isn't going to leap off the shelf for you but I'd recommend it to anyone who's ever tried swimming a few laps.

I read Dover Solo in one night Aug 08, 2011
By RussD I caught the bug to swim the English Channel at the beginning of 2011. Beforehand,
I did not have an extensive swimming background. But I've been working at the beginning
stages of preparing myself for this challenge and I am proud of the headway I have made.
Of course, the more I researched how to attack training for it the more I have realized
how much I did not comprehend the subtle, yet brutal, nuances involved.
That was before the night of Thursday, August 4th, where I read the entire account of Marcia
Cleveland's journey toward reaching her goal of swimming the English Channel in one sitting.
After finishing "Dover Solo", I was thankful and excited to learn its content.
Now I feel I understand the reality of attempting to swim the English Channel without
proper, defined preparation. Finally, I feel I, a swimming novice, have a clear view of
just how hard I will need to work and plan before I consider attempting an English Channel swim.
Saw this quote yesterday that I think is appropriate to define what Marcia has portrayed for someone
in my position "Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. YOU MUST SET YOURSELF ON FIRE."
I recommend "Dover Solo" as a great book to read for anyone interested in learning how to meet, head-on, any of life's challenges.
