1IPlease buy a better book  Dec 01, 2009
By Varada Gopalakrishnan
Having worked GSM and UMTS physical layer for over 10 years, I wanted to understand the EV-DO's physical layer. The search in Google and Amazon brought up this book and wanted to try it as the title says "guided tour of the physical layer".

It is not clear if the author intended to address engineers (as mentioned in the title) OR managers who may be interested in the technology but not interested in the details. Either way the book fails miserably. It does not provide any details on the "why" of any of the decisions made by the standard. While the examples are illustrative and the figures are good and explanatory, the book does not explain how the various options in the configuration can change the examples. The book almost takes a simplistic view of the standard and it does not point out what can change and what can not.

The biggest drawback, in my view, is the failure of the book to provide relevant specific references to the 3gPP2 standard. The only specific reference I found in the "Reference" section of the book (C.S0054) does not seem to explain the physical layer in any detail. I can not correlate anything written in the book to this specific standard. The analogies are distracting at the best and misleading at the worst.

As for the managers who may want to understand the technology without getting into the details, any number of white papers available is better than this book. The very reason why I picked up this book is to get the details that are missing in the white papers.

I'm sure there are better books that is worth your time and money more than this if you really want to understand the physical layer of EV-DO.
