Emancipated Minor

Set in the backdrop of the Civil-War-torn South, a twelve-year-old white boy’s recollection of the horror-filled events that transformed him from boy to man are delivered with the honesty and innocence that can come only from a child’s impressionable soul. Lem’s only recollection of his real parents is kindled and nurtured by the only parent he has ever known, Miss Benue, his black nanny. One too many abuses suffered by a young white boy at the hands of gangs who terrorized ColoredTown in Richmond, propels young Lemuel on a determined quest to find his rich, honorable and true parents in South Carolina. Armed with only with a belief in the ideal of what was the South, and high expectations of a warm and loving reunion with his true parents, Lem endures the trials and tribulations of Job, man’s greed, avarice and inhumanity to man and beast, only to learn the ugly truth about why a white baby was sent to live in Richmond’s ColoredTown. This powerfully told story presents itself as if it were the diary of young Lemuel, and it will have you smile, laugh, cry, turn away in disgust and horror, and force you come to grips with the true history that is known our Civil War.

4A look into America's past  Jan 31, 2007
By C. M. McKeown
The story takes place during the civil war and is told through the eyes of a child who is placed in the permanent care of his nanny but isn't sure why. It's filled with many hard truths concerning the wickedness of man, but it also has some endearing moments as well. This book is chilling, heart-warming, and thought-provoking.
