Exception to the Rule is the novel version of the the Huxtables Apr 05, 2011
By SistahFriend Book Club Exception to the Rule is the novel version of the the Huxtables. A father who never misses an opportunity to give his children words of wisdom. A mother whose top priority is taking care of her family. Children that are as close to perfect as any parent could dream of. Of course, we live in a world of imperfection, and that world directly impacts the characters of this story.
The book had a lot to offer and is definitely a blueprint for what families should be, but it moved too quickly. The characters could have been more developed so that the reader could have felt more connected to them. While the characters did experience adversities, the outcomes were almost too perfect.
Exception to the Rule is a feel good read. With a little expansion, it could definitely be a must read.

"O.O.S.A. Gets It Read!"
Bobby is the married father of three. He takes his role as head of his household seriously. He put before his children a positive example of black love, the importance of knowledge and other life's lessons true to being an African American in today's climate. One of those lessons he instilled his in children is the need to be the exception to the rule. These are lessons that his family, particularly his son, will have to rely on after Bobby's tragic death and the subsequent circumstances that befall the family.
I absolutely loved the positive portrayal of a young black family. Through the father Bobby, the author Bobby Trufant drops many jewels. The father didn't just talk it; he walked it and made it a part of everyday living as he never let an opportunity to instill lessons in his children pass. And he did so in a way of not being preachy. Subsequently, the author was able to do the same with readers. The only drawback was that there was so much conveyed in less than 200 pages. I feel that it would have been more effective had the author expanded the story and allowed for more development and explanation of the plot and characters. It resulted in a somewhat rushed and too neatly packaged ending. There were a few editing issues, including a flip flop in narration. That said, "Exception to the Rule" is a positive and refreshing read.

Family Values Nov 10, 2010
By Kisha-FLAVOR Book Club To his eldest son, Kwamina, Bobby Taylor is everything you could ask for in a husband and father. Bobby has instilled in his children the spirit of love and forgiveness. He has taught his children that kindness goes a long way and not to ever judge people based upon how they look or what you think they may have. Kwamina gets charged with a heinous crime and without the guidance of his father, he is forced to stand on everything that he learned from him. It is these teachings that lead to a bittersweet ending.
Exception to the Rule is a nicely written story of a traditional African-American family. It is their story of love and faith. In times where such a family has become almost nonexistent, it was a refreshing read. When Kwamina is wrongfully accused it is a painful reminder of the constant stereotypes that are placed upon our young men. What saves him is his character. I sincerely enjoyed this book not only because of the family that was represented, but because of the love, togetherness, and support they shared for not only each other, but all they came in contact with. And while they were setback by some traumatic events, they still managed to successfully work past all that was seeking to destroy them. Full of emotion, this was a positive, family-oriented read.
