Amazing story of a man who never lost hope or determination, even under the most horrific conditions. Inspiring. A great read, and highly recommended!

Easy and Informative read Dec 29, 2009

This is a very straight forward description of POW life in Nazi Germany. Although all camps and accounts were a little different, this is an especially good account of the psychological effects on a soldier. It strongly parallels my father's experience, although I have had to piece togehter parts because he won't talk of it. My late mother hinted at the effect but it never became apparent until her death just how much she covered for him and how dependent on her that he was. My pysically strong father (88 years old) is not psychologically strong and has avoided unknown situations that cause stress. I digress. The book was wonderful and did not embellish the danger of the experience. The book is easy and fast to read. Warning-if you idenify because your father was a POW, it will take longer becuase it is hard to read through tears. Highly recommended.

Top 3 books to read Jun 09, 2011
By Courtney A Scott I am an avid book reader (I read about 30 books a week approximately), and have read and re-read this book many times. It is an extremely well-written book that was a true joy to read despite my lack of interest of reading books of this time period. It is obvious that the author did extensive research to ensure accuracy and the ability to paint details to further enhance the book, which is why this book makes my top 3 books to read ever. This is the first book with the subject matter about World War II that I have ever enjoyed reading and wanted to re-read over and over again. Robert H. Miller's style of writing is insightful, eloquent and spell-binding.
