WHAT A WONDEFUL AND LASTING GIFT TO GIVE TO A CHILD! Sep 12, 2009
By D. Blankenship What a neat concept for a book which will make a perfect gift to the youngster interested in and loves fishing! Louis Gary Lamit has designed a beautiful journal that can be used, not only as a record book of great and exciting catches, but also when done properly can become a wonderful story and storage place for great memories.
This book begins with a glossary of common fishing terms and then goes on to picture examples of different fishing equipment, various live baits, quite a number of artificial lures used in casting and then a nice representation of various artificial flies used in fly fishing. Hey, it is all about fishing. The author then goes on to present a detailed and comprehensive format so that each fishing trip can be recorded by the young fishermen. Each journal entry consists of two pages. The first, the one of the left, is entitled "Fishing Today." Here can be recorded in an easy to use format dates, times, places, companions, locations, weather information, tide and moon statistics, bug conditions, types of areas fished such as lakes, streams, rivers, ponds, from the shore, dock, peer, bridge or boat. It has spaces provided to note the bate or lures or flies used and of course what species of fish was sought after and caught. Was catch and release used? How large was the fish and what was its color and then an area for general comments.
The author then goes on to offer space to note cleaning and cooking if the fish were kept. There are two or three spaces where personal notes can be kept. The second page is rather unique in that it offers a large space for an actual sketch to be made and under that a space where an actual photograph may be mounted if desired. At the end of each journal page the author has provided a small picture of some species of game fish and a brief paragraph of description, habits and best method of catching.
To my mind this journal is useful on several levels. First of course it provides a compact format where memories can be stored. Secondly, it cause the young one, and introduces them to the concept of journal keeping; an art form for which in later years they will be oh so grateful they mastered. It causes the young person to actually reflect over each trip and note just what they saw and what the learned. It is also a very neat thing to read for parents, grandparents and others who are interested in the child's life.
I must say, on a personal note that I went on my first fishing "trip" when I was four years old and can remember it vividly. When I was 10 years old a retired couple moved next door and the only way I can describe them is that they were full time fanatical trout fishermen. This husband and wife devoted almost the last thirty years of their lives to the art of fly fishing for trout, and more importantly to me, many hours of many days in teaching me, young as I was, all that they could. Everything from tying my own flies and making my own equipment, to catching (and most often releasing) the fish being pursued, cleaning, cooking and eating trout. The lessons in natural history, the outdoors, and living life to the fullest have been absolutely beyond value to me for a life time. One of the things they taught me was just what we are talking about here; keeping an exact record of the information stressed in this book; that I have done and have been done for almost 60 years now...I hope it was to their satisfaction. The lady of the house was a retired English Professor and was quite sharp in her critique of my journal keeping. I cannot tell you how much pleasure I get out of periodically reading through my fishing journal and smiling over the world as seen through a preteen young boy and then the eyes of the growing boy all the way through to his present state of dotage. (I cringe when I think of the possibility of her reviewing my review!)
As I stated, this journal book would be an ideal and useful present for any child inclined to take up the art of fishing; fishing for any species anywhere, anytime. There are so many lessons to be learned from keeping a record such as this and it can be such a useful tool to make further contact with and share with their child or grandchild. Recommend this one highly!

Excellent! Sep 19, 2009

I know that those who love to fish will truly enjoy this top-notch book by author, Louis Lamit. The cover is well done brimming with different fish and inviting you to open it up and get started jotting down your fishing adventure.
Inside is much information for the fisher, such as pictures of fishing equipment, live bait, Lures and Flies. The pages are laid out simply and give space for all important information of your day out fishing for example: Place, Type, Equipment, Bait. There is also space to write the date, time, location, weather and even bug conditions. Perhaps next time you plan a trip you will remember those bugs were a little too much to bear and go somewhere else.
On the next page you have space to place a photo and add a journal entry. As an added treat at the bottom of each page is a picture of a fish, it's name and the information about it. That was really interesting, even for a non-fisherman like me.
I truly believe this is a great idea for a book and one that every serious fisherman would love to have. I also think it would be wonderful for someone to give to the little fisherman (or lady) that is being introduced to this sport. A great book, well worth your consideration.
As Summer Winds Down.... Sep 06, 2009
By Grady Harp Louis Gary Lamit is a great fisherman and continues to practice the art of fishing as learned and remembered from his father - precious memories of spending quiet times on the lakes of Michigan. Wanting to share his experiences and knowledge with the general public (both of the fishing type and the novice watcher from the banks or the pier or the boats), he has constructed this Manual or Journal in which the reader and fisherman can record experiences with the pole and the fly. Not only does Lamit give us the room and ideas of how to record fishing jaunts, he also provides footnote information on types of fish and their secrets in avoiding and giving in to the fisherman!
At the beginning of the Journal Lamit offers photographs and drawings of fishing poles and equipment, different types of bait, and an assortment of flies needed for special types of weather and fishing. It is all great fun while being informative, and simply reading this usable Journal will conjure memories of the past or create plans for future excursions on the water. It is an apt way to while away the last of summer days. A very helpful guide. Grady Harp, September 09
Fishing Journal Sep 06, 2009
By Sandra K. Stiles In August I reviewed the book "Wally the Walking Fish Meets Madison and Cooper. You can find my review here. Gary Lamit has created a Fishing Journal to accompany this book I was very impressed with the journal. For someone who does a lot of fishing it is an invaluable tool. In this journal you can log the date, time (start and end), place you fished, who you fished with, the location, weather, tides, water and bug conditions. You can be specific about the type of water you fished in the type of equipment, bait, lures/flies you used. You can log the species, and details such as weight, size, color. Hints for cleaning and cooking. You can sketch the fish or write another journal entry and attach a photo. Other features that made this so alluring to me was the pictures of equipment in the front. My sister has always done a lot of fishing. I always thought a rod was a rod. Boy was I wrong. I never knew there were so many different types of lures out there. At the bottom of each journal page they have a fish and information about it. A great tool for identifying fish. I really enjoyed the information from the book. I know who I am passing this on to. I haven't fished since my father passed away. My sister lives on a lake and fishes at least once a week. I know this will be of great value to her.
An excellent gift for the fishing enthusiast that regularly takes along a "special companion" Sep 02, 2009
By Charles Ashbacher This book is not a journal of great fishing excursions complete with examples of the whoppers that got away and the remaining ones that were boated. It is the raw material from which such tales can be created. Each two-page segment contains sections where the data of the day can be recorded. Sections are reserved for information such as the date, time, participants, environmental conditions, equipment used, species caught and who cleaned and who cooked. There is also a section reserved for a photo of the results.
The idea for this book was generated by the author's recollections of the fishing excursions he went on with his father. In that context, it would be an excellent gift for the fishing enthusiast that regularly takes along a "special companion."
