Creating Mythology: More Substance and Intuition Here Than Expected Jan 03, 2010
By Grady Harp Author c. huilo c. has set about to enlighten his audience about the 'origin of the species' creation of queer nature. What he has created in this brief but well thought out premise is a beautiful morsel of mythology of how queer people (the author's choice of term) have been on earth since the beginning of creation. His purpose: 'is intended to help reacquaint gay society with their lost magical identities and to help the world community engage in equal rights for their queer family and neighbors'. This may sound like an insurmountable task, given the continued prejudice and homophobia that result in events such as the Matthew Shepard case among many others, but c. huilo c. is taking a stance that is well worth reading.
From the design of the book, illustrated with excellent paintings by the author, to the choice of prose, this little volume speaks eloquently and gently about the formation or creation of the Lolaboy, a heshe who is a combination of the masculine and feminine traits that make the character sensitive to beauty, to nature, to feelings and to finding the 'twinning' of the initial queer being. Yes, there is a large portion of philosophy shared in these pages, but the author knows how to creep up on the reader, involve the reader in the magic of the subject matter, and just as children's stories are embedded in the nascent minds of innocent children, so are the concepts of how the origin of the queer world began. It makes for a beautiful little read, one that is so well written that it may just become a big seller. The author's sincerity and strong sense of color and design make this little art book a pleasure: there are further editions to follow and they are well worth the waiting! Grady Harp, January 10
