5An adrenalin rush  Aug 10, 2005
By Garry D. Seaman
David Hoerner writes a true epic adventure about Alaska bush flying. He masterfully tells a story of one man's courage to follow his dreams. A logger in northwest Montana, Hoerner tested his skills in the extreme Alaska wilderness to become an exceptional professional bush pilot. His family's struggle to survive mining Alaska gold touches one's soul. Hoerner's story captures Alaska's magnificence, beauty and peril. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an adrenalin rush.

5A great read  Oct 12, 2005
By Raymond W. Cayford "Bill Cayford"
One of the best adventure books I have read in a long time.
I simply could not put it down.
Pilots and non pilots alike will love this book.
Even a low time pilot is made to feel like this could have been me.

5A great read!  Apr 06, 2011
By Gene G. Bannister
I met Dave recently, both of us involved in some training in Coeur d'Alene and staying at the same hotel. He is an interesting and enjoyable guy, yet one who doesn't let on that such a story as this might exist in his past. Over the course of a couple days he told me bits and pieces of what sounded like a grand adventure in Alaska, one that involved airplanes, a gold mine, big machinery, thieves, bears, and amazing scenery - what more would be needed to draw a guy in! He kept saying that the whole thing was crazy and he should never have survived it. On top of that he told me that he had written a book about it all. He showed up the next day with a copy for me to read and I started into it that very night. By the way he had described the long ordeal of writing the book I didn't expect all that much. I was wrong. This is a great story that takes the reader from excitement to fingernail chewing to heartbreak, all in the span of 274 pages. I found it a quick and easy read that held my attention throughout while not feeling like I was being flogged with excess bravado and B.S. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a compelling story of dreams and the human spirit. A lot was sacrificed to get there and there was a lot at stake if it failed, but these guys put everything into it until they could do no more. I just hope I get more opportunities to hang out with the author so I can hear more of his stories. Enjoy.

5Wish it was longer!  Nov 23, 2009
By Bob Pettit
This book tells of the hardships, conflicts, thievery, fun, and flying excitement of a summer spent mining gold in Alaska. As other reviewers have said David Hoerner is a great story teller; I was literally mesmerized by the story and was often mentally transported to Alaska and lived the adventure with the group. This is a great bush aviation book with the added bonus of the stories of why the flights needed to take place along with the extraordinary flying conditions along the way.

It is not an instructional book so dont buy it looking for tips on flying in the mountains, but if you are looking for a GREAT bush aviation adventure book you can't go wrong with this one! The only negative I can offer is that I wish they would have gone back in subsequent years so the story could be longer. After only a few days of reading, I just finished the book and my only disappointment is that it's over.

I will definitely be ordering Mr. Hoerner's other book!

5I haven't enjoyed a book like this for a long time!  Feb 09, 2009
By MR.LBS.
Truth be told, I've haven't read a book from cover-to-cover for probably the last 15 years -- I've read mostly articles on the internet, and car magazines. However, after having got this book in the mail, that all changed. David keeps you riveted with the his details of his, his cousin, and his uncle's endeavor to find gold in the Alaskan wilderness. The stories flow well from chapter to chapter, and it is enjoyable to read from both a pilot and non-pilot perspective -- though I think the average pilot will understand some of the sparsely peppered aviation terminology a little more. Much of the book is spent detailing the author's harrowing flights in his Cessna 206 for supplies for the mining operation, trying to keep the operation afloat.
Simply put, I've enjoyed this book immensely. It has gotten me back into reading books again. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone!
