Footprints on a Small Planet: Memories of Mesoamerica

In 1998, Theodore P. Druch and Maria Ruiz pulled up stakes, sold everything, and at age 58, set off, with their two Miniature Schnauzers and a Siamese cat, on a ten-year Odyssey around the world. Living in cities such as Bangkok, Nairobi, and Buenos Aires, they also spent years traveling to far-flung places at the ends of the earth like Komodo, Borneo, Darjeeling, and the remote Vietnamese village of Sapa, deep in the mountains along the border with China. Volume one is the story of their travels in Mexico and Central America in an old motor home, traveling Mesoamerica from top to bottom. Richly embellished with a wealth of description of natural beauties; vivid re-creations of life in the ancient ruined cities of the Maya; eyewitness testimony to the erosion of our planetary environment; and sometimes hilarious accounts of their adventures learning the ropes, this potpourri of travel writing, fiction, and relaxed good humor is sure to keep you glued to the page.

5From Barbara Sherman  Oct 29, 2009
By Maria Ruiz "travel lover"
hola, 10 years ago while traveling through mexico, Fred and I spent a few days in the city of Merida, in the state of Yucatan. While there, we met a most interesting couple who were just beginning a world tour, starting with mexico. We asked if we could be on their email list, because we would like to hear about their adventures. So, for the last ten years we have kept in contact with them. First, I need to say that I'm no book critic, in fact, I hate to write anything, but I do like to read, so here goes. To make a long story short, Ted of Ted and Maria, has written a book about their travels through Mesoamerica. I have just finished reading it and found it most interesting, humorous and delightful. Ted has a talent for describing things in an almost poetic way and I found myself picking it up and reading it whenever I could. So,anyone who has an RV, likes to travel, and interested in adventure will certainly enjoy this book. Attached are copies of the front and back pages of the book for a little look/see. hasta luego, barbara y fred

5Wonderful, funny, fascinating!  Sep 01, 2009
By Karyl Miller "book maven"
I just loved this book and the very real and funny characters: the writer Ted Druch, his wife Maria Ruiz, their two mischief-making dogs, and a 1976 Pace Arrow RV (unfit for any speed on the roads of Mexico and below). Part travelogue, part sitcom, I'd like to buy the movie rights!

5Fabulous!  Jun 10, 2010
By Barbara J. Donaldson
We met Ted & Maria in Mazatlan, and were fortunate to have spent time travelling with them.At that time there was talk about "The book in his head waiting to be written" I'm so happy Ted put his adventures on paper. He & Maria are one of the neatest couples I have met, and their travels and experiences along the way, make for a great read - funny-sincere and you certainly learn a lot;you feel like you're right there with them,Ted has a way with words.I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes to travel, or just to share an amazing adventure.
Thanks guys! From your Canadian friend Barbara Donaldson
