The Revealing Account Of An Historic Icon May 04, 2009 (Official Apex Reviews Rating: 4.5 Stars)
Nicholas Apostol was always aware of the influential role that his family played in the shaping of Russian history; however, it wasn't until he was regaled by his grandmother's illustrious tales of his grandfather, Vladimir, that he gained an even greater understanding of just how prominent his family line had grown throughout the years. With a lineage that extends directly back to the dynasty borne of Genghis Khan himself, Vladimir was no less significant a historical figure for the depth and breadth of his reach in international affairs.
In the pages of For Better-For Worse, Apostol presents the reader with the full collection of his grandfather's memoirs, in which he details his vast and sundry exploits in the realm of Russian diplomatic service. In a life that spanned three-quarters of a century, Vladimir both witnessed and created a living history that endures to this day. Also, as a result of his extensive travels to several different countries, Vladimir was able to connect with a wide variety of emissaries, dignitaries, and other notable figures, all of whom helped shape his world view and emboldened his dedication and commitment to public service.
Despite portraying a life lived in relative opulence, though, For Better-For Worse frames Vladimir in a very humanistic light, displaying the depths of his sincerity and compassion for his fellow man for all to see. Very rarely does one find a politician or appointed leader who has genuine concern for the plight of common humanity, and to witness such traits play themselves out over the course of Vladimir's life is both eye-opening and refreshing.
An inviting read that provides the reader with a unique look into the realm of real, practical history, For Better-For Worse is a welcome literary treat. Highly recommended.
