For the Fatherland Dec 16, 2009
By Dan A. Berkebile This is a fascinating story about the Nazification of the German population. The story is told through the eyes of Kurt, a young man who grew up in Germany in the years after World War One. We watch Kurt's indoctrination into The Nazi Movement, his entrance and service in the "SS" and in the end, his regret for having done the things he had done.
I could never understand how or why the Germans would follow a madman like Hitler until I read this book.
Interesting read Oct 26, 2010
By haz99 After reading this book it did give a different viewpoint to think about. Having friends who lived this experience as children during this time period, our discussions backed up most of the book. Anyone who is interested in WWII and life in the period right before this in Germany will enjoy this book, although it is thought provoking

"Time Doctor"
I must admit that I was one of Walter's professors at American Military University several years ago. His research and writing were top shelf from the start, and his interest and knowledge of National Socialist Germany was far superior than most people I ever interacted with. As I read this book, I recalled all the Germans I had personally interviewed who had been in the Hitler Youth, and later even in the SS, including my 1984 interview with Hitler Youth Leader Artur Axmann, just to name one person.
Walter's book, while historical fiction, is true to the history. I could easily place many of my own interview subjects' names within that book as the main subject. The story was tragically universal, and Walter does an excellent job of weaving great narrative within the historical framework of a nation gone mad.
Good job, great read, and I would recommend that history, sociology, philosophy, psychology and literature professors and teachers consider this book as required reading, as it spans all the disciplines, and serves as a warning.
One of the best books about Nazi youth Sep 08, 2010
By Aaylan Great story about the Hilter Youth and the story of young boys growing up in the era of Nazi Germany. One of the best stories about the Hilter Youth ever written. Winner of the Bronze medal by the Military History Society and definitely a must read book!
OUTSTANDING Nov 07, 2009
By Brian M. Sheetz An outstanding book.Very well written. The detail is superb. This book provides a inside view of the rise of a german youth in the Hitler Youth up through the SS. Through his eyes we see the horror of the Third Riech and the Final Solution. Then the consequences that come. Very easy to read and understand. A very good book. OUTSTANDING!!!!! I hope to read further writings from CSM Walter S. Zapotoczny
