For the Love of Land: Global Case Studies of Grazing in Nature's Image

For the Love of Land describes practical, proven methods for bringing degraded landscapes--grasslands, rangelands, savannas, and farmlands--back to life through mimicking natural migratory grazing patterns with domestic livestock. Through a combination of essays describing nuts-and-bolts management guidelines, the natural history of grazing, and inspiring stories of successful practitioners of landscape stewardship and restoration, For the Love of Land points the way to an ecologically, economically, and socially regenerative future.

This is an excellent book for all those already involved in holistic planned grazing, MIg type grazing or is just starting out with grazing a few cattle. Holistic Management: A New Framework for Decision Making

5For the Love of Land: Global Case Studies of Grazing in Nature's Image  Sep 21, 2009
For those interested in manageing rangelands world-wide this is the bible. Jim Howell does a wonderful job sharing his knowledge and experience working with nature and the people on the land from the American west to Mexico, South America, Australia and Africa. Jim's understanding of how plants respond to grazing and the plant/animal relationship is amazing. Of special interest to me was the prehistorical account of the rangelands and how they and their resident inhabitants evolved. If you own or manage any land anywhere you should own this book.

5Grazing as a tool to create desired landscapes  Aug 28, 2009
Jim Howell's book discusses and gives examples from around the world of how planned grazing and the ecosystem processes are part of an interdependent system. The underlying holistic principles remain the same, but the actual application of the tool of grazing varies depending on the brittleness of the enviroment and the desired outcome. He also emphasizes the importance of monitoring to be sure we stay on track relative to fostering our landscape and animal production goals.

5Thank you Jim Howell  Aug 15, 2009
We are so fortunate, 1) that Jim and his family have been all around the world to Holistically managed family resources, 2) that Jim has an uncanny "understandability" style in writing about these experiences--land, animals, people, ecology, and the triple bottom line, and 3) that all of these articles and works are combined in one volume!!

This volume is a condensed collection of practical, independent, and inspirational practicums, with complete focus on the Whole, that reads so easy. There is nothing intimidating about picking up this book.

Responsible leading edge grass farmers, policy makers, and citizens alike, buy this book, read it, and share it with others. These pages will reveal how Holistically managing the ecological, social, and financial dynamics of Life simultaneously, for the short and long term, are a benefit to all.

5A fascinating book about restoring natural environments!!!  Apr 17, 2009
"For the Love of Land" is a masterful collection of hands-on experiences and successful stories about restoring productivity to farming areas, based on the simple notion of sustainability. Jim Howell skillfully captures the essence of how ecosystems work and how to use our knowledge to recover natural resources at a time when we need them most. A wonderful read, not just for specialists, but for anyone interested in learning how we can make the world more sustainable and productive. This book is a 'must' to rethink how we relate to our natural resources and what kind of planet we want to leave for future generations.
