Free Men and Dreamers: Dawn's Early Light

This third volume of LC Lewis’s War of 1812 historical fiction epic, Free Men and Dreamers, covers the British offensive against Washington D.C. Once Napoleon is subdued, and despite the commencement of peace negotiations, Britain unleashes her triumphant European conquerors on America. And their primary target? Washington. While attentions turn to the defense of the Capital, mercenaries threaten the Winding Willows and White Oak plantations, forcing enemies to become allies, fighting side-by-side with freed slaves to defend their homes and families. Mere miles away, the Capital’s defense now rests predominantly upon citizen soldiers and a most unlikely naval force—a rag-tag fleet called the Chesapeake flotilla—and the men who built it. But Britain’s house is also divided over the war, as the cost mounts in blood and money. Experience the pain and passion of five families—American, slave and British—as they endure the three darkest days of American history—the week when Washington burned.

5Superb Saga - Historical Fiction at its Best  Dec 11, 2009
By Anne Bradshaw "Author"
I enjoyed reading Laurie (L.C.) Lewis's latest book (Dawn's Early Light) so much that I've nominated it for a Whitney Award.

Dawn's Early Light is book three of Laurie (L.C.) Lewis's Free Men and Dreamer series, set against the backdrop of the War of 1812. It illustrates the first American-born generation--the children of the Founding Fathers, which was also the generation that received the Restoration.

When Covenant decided to drop the series, readers wrote asking Laurie to finish the story. She decided to self-publish the manuscript for book three to honor their investment in the series. Amazon's affiliate, Booksurge, was the publisher Laurie chose, but she contracted the same editor who worked on Dark Sky at Dawn and Twilight's Last Gleaming to ensure the quality of this volume would match that of preceding books

It is always a bonus for me when a good read not only brings pleasure, but is also a learning experience. I feel like I've been there in 1812 and can now compare events back then to those of our day.

Dawn's Early Light was written as a stand-alone read as well as a seamless continuation of the Free Men and Dreamers epic. And it does just that. I read the book while moving house. Looking forward to a new chapter each night was about the only thing that got me through the removal ordeal. That, and listening to Debbie West Coon's CD, You Are Loved.

Having read volumes One and Two, I was anxious to continue this fascinating family saga. What an exciting, eye-opening, and altogether superb story. I've read other historical novels in the past and sometimes found them dry--especially when famous people have speeches put in their mouths in a way that makes the words feel disconnected from reality. This doesn't happen at all in Laurie's books. Everything flows in one grand action-packed tale of drama and strong emotion.

I'm excited for Volume Four in this series. I don't want to give anything away about the ending of Dawn's Early Light, so will only say that I HAVE to see what happens next to all these characters. Their fictional lives are as important to me as the historically accurate period in which they are found.

This author's work have improved and strengthened with each new publication. She is a writer to watch. I, for one, am an enthusiastic follower. I hope she has many more stories of this caliber to share.

5Our Nation's History  Apr 27, 2010
By Writers 4 Literacy "Writers 4 Literacy Reviews"
Laurie made this part of history and the war of 1812 come to life. I fell in love with the main characters immediately, and I cheered when Jed freed the slaves living on his plantation. This story made me wish that I could have been there fighting alongside those living at the Willows when Sebastian Dupree attacked their home. I have visited Washington D.C. several times, and I have read the stories about the British burning our nation's capital during this era. Although, I knew the story, I still cried when Laurie made this part of history real with her descriptions of destruction.

Laurie had a way of making me truly experience the pain and passion of the American's, the slaves, and the British as they endured that week in American history when Washington burned. Anyone that enjoys reading historical fiction will certainly enjoy this book.

A book for history buffs. Not for those like myself that wish history never happened.

5Excellent Historical  Feb 26, 2010

L.C. Lewis obviously knows, and understands, the era about which she writes. She includes such vivid details and she's a master at using the English language. The story is engaging and the characters are realistic. I found myself intrigued with this book. If you enjoy historicals, this is a series you won't want to miss.
