Freedom's Shadow

When Randy Schell made his first trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica, he discovered Sam Sharpe Square. His research revealed that Sam Sharpe was an educated slave, Baptist deacon, and valiant leader whose message of passive resistance spread throughout the island and culminated in Jamaican slaves refusing to work on Christmas Day 1831. When the peaceful protest turned into a bloody rebellion, hundreds of slaves were executed, including Sharpe. Undeniably, it was because of Sam Sharpe that, only three years after he was hanged, slavery was finally abolished in Jamaica. For Randy Schell, each subsequent visit to the island heightened his fascination with Sharpe’s story. The result is Freedom’s Shadow, a touching, carefully documented, and very compelling fictionalized account of one man’s heroism and the sacrifices he made to bring freedom to his people. This book will appeal to readers who love history, stories of social reform, or a compelling read about heroism and unparalleled courage.

5Amazing story.  Apr 13, 2012

An amazing story about a truly amazing hero. Where did this guy come from? Saw the movie Amazing Grace about the fall of the British slave trade. This picks up where the movie left off. This guy (Sharpe) tore down the actual institution. Interesting read.

5A fascinating story of how abolition took hold in Jamaica, highly recommended  Oct 09, 2009
By Midwest Book Review
There are martyrs for many causes, some more successful than others. "Freedom's Shadow" is author Randy Schell telling the story of one Sam Sharpe, one slave who stood up to his oppressive society through peaceful protest a hundred years before it became the norm. His death ultimately lead to the abolishment of slavery in Jamaica. "Freedom's Shadow" is a fascinating story of how abolition took hold in Jamaica, highly recommended.
