From Both Sides of the Couch: Reflections of a Psychoanalyst, Daughter Tennis Player and Other Selves

Fern W Cohen, PhD, a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist in private practice in New York City, has long been committed to conveying in everyday language what the psychoanalytic process is about and how it works. That passion informs her teaching and supervising as well as her writing, which includes her personal take on the professional problems raised by her experience with breast cancer STORIES OF ILLNESS AND HEALING: WOMEN WRITE THEIR BODIES (Kent State University Press, in press 2007) and a prize-winning essay on the intersection of the prosaic and the professional ("Attachment is Where You Find It"). A graduate of Radcliffe College, Dr. Cohen earned her Ph.D. in School Psychology from New York University and completed her analytic training at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanlaysis as well as the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR) of which she is a member.

5Great Insights into Analysis  Jul 04, 2007
I read this book in two days. Dr. Cohen's articulate and accessible account of her own journey as a patient, informed by her knowledge as a practitioner, really clarifies the difference between psychoanalysis and other forms of talk therapy. Having felt rather isolated as a layperson undergoing psychoanalytic treatment, finding a book which so adeptly describes the intensity of the process at it's most effective has been an affirming gift.
