A decent overview - but not much help in the day-to-day embodiment Feb 22, 2010
By Grace L. Judson
"Clarity + Focus = Inspired Action"
I'm truly impressed by the breadth of this book's scope and extensiveness of the resources it draws on. And I'm impressed by the way the author synthesized the thoughts and approaches from all of them to create something that's both well-informed and distinctly her own work.
At the same time, I think that's both a strength and a weakness. This feels to me like a survey more than a true in-depth approach to making change. Many of the things suggested - meditation, for instance, or presence, or surrender - are simple concepts that are often immensely challenging to put into actual embodied practice. In fact, I'd have to say that they're often not things we can "do" through action, or through an expression of will. Rather, they're things that over time and through awareness we can allow.
With that in mind, some of the suggestions seem to me to be more likely to create a feeling of struggle and "need to do it right" rather than providing readers with pointers to ways to relax into what's always and already available when we stop.
In my work with clients, I see so many people who are driven absolutely frantic by this sense of "I'm doing it wrong" in their very real desire to find the sense of peace and wholeness that they instinctively know is their birthright.
That's why, despite my respect for the interviews the author conducted (what a fantastic way to collect experiences and ideas for a book like this!) and for the extensiveness of her knowledge of so many great resources, I have reservations about the book overall.
In short, if you're looking for a well-thought-out overview and multiple perspectives - this could be a good choice for you. But if you want more practical, hands-on help - this will probably leave you feeling frustrated and unsatisfied.

Coaching with Wisdom Mar 21, 2009
By John U. Lord There are countless books out there which offer good advice, and many are just chock full of inspiration. But too often they carry their readers on a wave of enthusiasm that peters out long before reaching the shore. Why? The run of the mill inspirational, self-help book presents life as if were (or were supposed to be) entirely free from challenge, care and occasional defeat. But life IS like that. It DOES include these things. And penny pulpit exhortations to "abundance" and "fulfillment" aren't enough. Readers end up feeling disillusioned, or, worse, like greater failures than before.
This is where Jennifer Joy Walker's "Full Color Living" is so completely different. She offers the realistic perspective that people really need. Her approach enlists the support of inner resources we probably never knew existed, resources which give our lives direction and purpose. At the same time, she acknowledges "the dark side" of life in a way that so many books (annoyingly) refuse to do. But she shows that there's a way through these experiences along which readers may uncover treasures buried within even the worst of life's difficulties. It is this balanced approach that makes this book so unusually effective.
Furthermore, the book is woven throughout with wonderful stories. Facts tell, stories sell, and all of us, at one time or another, need to be "sold" on the idea that life holds much more for us than we allow ourselves to believe. Accepting that possibility is the beginning of all positive change. "Full Color Living" convinces...and shows the way.

By G. T. Fletcher I have read a lot of self help books(Jampolsky,Hay,Chopra, etc.), but have not run across one that connects with what I call "real life", practical, and repeatable ideas to enrich my day to day life. This book offers so many ways to improve the excitement and joy in my life, taken from the viewpoints of so many individuals living exciting and joyful lives! This is definitely one of those rare books that I make it a point to refer to time and time again after reading it the first time.

By Steven P. Silverman Full Color Living by Jennifer Joy Walker, is deeply thought provoking and thoroughly engaging. The subtitle, transform your life from simply surviving to absolutely thriving, is even more meaningful and appropriate in today's challenging economy.
Through interviews, self-reflective exercises, and extraordinary insights, Full Color Living helps answer the question of why some people are thriving - living lives that are authentic, satisfying, passionate and jubilant, while others are merely surviving. As a Certified Life Coach and consummate student of personal development, I found the ideas and concepts to be highly practical and inspirational for coach, client, and anyone who wants to learn how to take concrete action to live a more joyful, meaningful, and rewarding life.
