Finally, a farid assessment of Ripley Aug 22, 2010
By usarmsresearch This is a very well researched and fair treatment of General Ripley. The various charges and slights against him are detailed and discussed in light of other recent research, extracts from the Official Records, and the input of Civil War arms collectors/researchers and individuals knowledgable of the firearms manufacturing process. The bottom line is that Ripley was a good officer with a difficult job during the worst of the crisis and did the job well. This is a book that should be read by everyone interested in Civil War firearms and combat service support, and War Department administration during the Civil War.
