Getting Out of Dodge

Sally Rand can’t tell the Good Guys from the Bad Guys. Hoping for a fresh start, she moves to Evanston, but within moments of her arrival, an errant Atomic Fire Ball threatens to put a permanent crimp in her plans. Isobel Callahan, upstairs neighbor and free-spirited call girl, comes to the rescue, and the two forge an unlikely friendship, tragically cut short the day Isobel is found dead in her tub. When police rule it a suicide, Sally becomes obsessed with learning why a woman so full of life would suddenly want to end it. And the clues she stumbles on—a cryptic note, a name spelled in magnetic letters, a box of baby clothes—only add to her confusion. Frustrated, she turns to Leonard Kravitt, her enigmatic landlord, a man as maddeningly secretive as he is sexy, and discovers that the deeper she digs for the truth, the greater her risk of losing him. Equal parts mystery, comedy, and romance, Getting Out of Dodge is an engaging tale of love, self-discovery, and hope.

5A 10-gallon Hat Full of Fun  Apr 27, 2009
By Juliana K. Bennett "Julie Bennett"
Julie Weary's "Getting Out of Dodge" is a funny, wry look at love and friendship. In just a few days, all the beliefs in narrator Sally Rand's life are upended. The ways author Weary has her cope with the changes are sometimes hilarious and sometimes poignant, but never dull. Weary's gift for wordplay makes each page dance and many of her descriptions, of people and Sally's reactions to them, are a riot. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who appreciates well-crafted writing and a strong story.

5The best  Feb 21, 2009
By Quint Jane McC "Quint Jane McC"
Written with wit and wisdom, this is a surprising love story among quirky appealing characters ...

I remember Janet Fitch, author of the brilliant White Oleander, saying in an interview, 'Trite is anything that's ever been said before.' Nothing in Julie Weary's vocabulary is trite; every page of Getting Out of Dodge is filled with clever and amusing and drag-me-to-the-next-page sentences."

5Funny and Fabulous  Feb 08, 2010
By Deborah Disandro "Slightly Off Superwoman"
Julie Weary writes with wit, sarcasm and sass. Her characters come to life in this sweet, funny sweet novel and I hope it's the first of many more to come!

5Laugh Out Loud  Jun 29, 2009

Julie Weary can make you laugh out loud! Julie Weary's humorous and original style draws you through a touching and poignant story in which her meticulously drawn characters face age-old dilemmas with a fresh eye. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would love to read more from Ms. Weary.
