5As important as practicing your scales  Mar 23, 2006
what a wonderful contribution to the wonderful world of music !!

i read this book and felt comforted by Don's words. no longer did i feel the isolation and shame of being an artist who for many of my 40some years would sabotage alot of my works. this subject can be layered with shame ...why would anyone fear music ? aren't we supposed to be in love with it and if we have the gift shouldn't we carry it on our backs like a sacred golden cow ? for some of us we do carry it and it can feel like a burden because we are so stuck underneath with fear.

i received a degree in jazz vocal studies in montreal canada and during my formative years i was embarrassed to share my fears with my fellow classmates who seemed to have it all under control. they would perform, compose and scintillate with ease. i got through my degree with honours to boot but i felt so filled with shame because of the fears i had with performing and creating . all the A's in the world couldn't help me deal with the underlying issues that weren't ' spelt out on an exam or paper. my house is lined with half finished songs, incomplete paintings etc.. these unfinished works are a reflection of my feelings of incompleteness and uncertainty. i am a very spiritual person who has always struggled with the issues of ego and the arts.

i really appreciated the layout of the book and how thorough he was in dealing with all aspects of musician's duties. i especially loved how he talked about the need to feel self-worth and not self-importance. i wept when i read these paragraphs because it deeply comforted me. i HAVE ALWAYS felt that music/arts are a gift and that flows through us.. we do not own it . we have the sacred task of taking those "messages" and bringing it out to the world to hear and to hopefully become transformed by it.

this book has been a very important part of my creative healing.
