Gilda Gets Wise

Gilda is a buff Orpington hen, and a member of a close-knit neighborhood of like-minded "birds of a feather." Everything is hunky-dory on the block until Gilda gets a letter from her sister. Evidently, Gilda's breeding is not entirely pure, because her sister is a black Orpington, and lives in a neighborhood some distance away, where customs are different than the buff's. Gilda's sister, Ethel Mae has come down with the deadly croup, and Gilda feels that she must go to her and do what she can to help. When Gilda arrives at her sister's house, Gilda does whatever her sister thinks will help her, even though Ethel Mae's customs are different and strange to her. When Gilda returns home, she is no longer the same. This disturbs her neighbors, who like everything the way it is just fine. Thank heaven, one of Gilda's neighbors opens her little chicken heart to the strange new bird Gilda has become. With the help of her empathetic friend, the unintentionally subversive Gilda breaks the imperceptible shell of intolerance that has surrounded the neighborhood. In the end, the results are perhaps worth the pain of breaking with conventions, and certainly more comfortable for those with "differences."

5My eighth grade class was enchanted with this book.  Nov 12, 1999

"Gilda Gets Wise" is a fun, funny tale of adventure, acceptance, openness, and cultural diversity. Its serious message is written and illustrated with great charm. I read it to my 8th grade class. They laughed, objected when the bell rang before the finish, and insisted on staying after class to hear the end. They were as enchanted with it as I was.

4an illuminating illuminated manuscript  May 05, 1999

Gilda quietly changes, and because of her changes, the world changes around her. It is akin to the subtle wind generated by the fluttering wings of a butterfly which puts into motion the forces that will become a storm. Gilda is like the quiet author who finally publishes her own work so that we may see the world in a new way. Thanks Gilda.

Did I mention the illustrations? The illustrations are marvelous.

5This is a lovely story about friendship & tolerance.  Sep 15, 1999

This is a delightful book. The artwork is a pleasure to see, and the colors highlight the story. The story teaches something beautiful about friendship and tolerance in a gentle way.
