This Book Will Take You Back Dec 01, 2009
By T. Turner
"Tiffany Turner"
This was an interesting collection of short stories set in the 80s. It did take me back a bit to growing up as a teenager in the 80s. Some of the characters were very different than my experiences, which back then, depended on the groups you hung out with.
I think some of the characters and situations were captured well. In fact, I felt deeply compelled by many of the characters and their problems. But some of the stories ended without truly finishing. Too many threads were left hanging. They feel short of what I needed to know.
But a couple really had great endings. I really enjoyed the short story involving an older girl and her friend. They became chaperones for a younger brother's tween party. The weird things that can happen did. And it was a great ending that feed my catharsis.
Overall, I did enjoy the trip back to the past this book supplied. It would make a great gift for someone who wants to go back, or someone who wants to get a glimpse of what it was like growing up then.

"Eat. Drink. Read. Be Merrier."
GIRL VS. BEAR is a fine collection of nine short stories, all written by Ms. Kerr.
The stories encompass so many different aspects of teenage growing pains. Though the stories say "from the 80's," I believe anyone can relate to the messages that are presented. Only subtle clues showcase the difference between now and the 80's. The overall messages are universal in time and place.
One character struggles with the idea of her mother dating a younger man. All she can think about is how embarrassing it will seem to everyone else. It isn't until she discovers that her mother's boyfriend has abilities of his own does she begin to realize that her mother needs her own life, as well.
In another story, the plans of one boy at tennis camp go totally awry. When a bad case of sunburn turns him into a hermit, he experiences more from his time alone than he would have trying to be the smooth player.
These are just two of the wonderful stories in the collection. As is the case with most short story collections, everyone will find something different in each of the tales. Some will touch you more than others. I'm sure the ones that spoke to me will differ from those of everyone else.

The timelessness of teen angst... Dec 28, 2008
By BDP An uncomfortably familiar look at high school girlhood. Perfectly captures the angst of unsuitable friendships designed to make one's parents crazy, hormone-addled quests for equally unsuitable boyfriends, and the all-consuming dilemma of forging a unique personality without drawing attention to oneself. A great set of stories!
Timeless Teen Stories Dec 20, 2008
By Harlow Lisa Kerr's short stories about the 1980s offer teenage stories that are timeless. The thoughts and actions of these characters are so realistic. One minute the reader feels sad yet the next she is laughing out loud. Even though these characters were in the 1980s, they sound like teenagers of the present, and both young and old readers will easily relate to them.
Amazing Stories Dec 06, 2008
By Richard F. Rockwell I loved this collection of short stories for so many reasons. From one story to the next I was moved from tears to laughter. I cannot wait until she publishes again.
