Goddess: Memoir of a Transsexual

She became the iconic image of the perfect transsexual female. A stunningly beautiful face and body that exploded onto the world wide web at the turn of the millenium and inspired artists and photographers and provoked adulation and confusion in countless men AND women. Raquel Reyes' charismatic presence, jaw dropping beauty and bold sensuality are the stuff of legend... but it's her life, the one she chose and ultimately survived, that fuels this rich and entertaining read. Written with great style by Raquel herself, it is a vivid recreation of a life filled with pain and pleasure, glamour and heartache, self destruction and redemption. From Tampa where she was born to the clandestine brothels of Boston and New York to the mansions of Miami Beach and Los Angeles where she played with actors, rock stars and porn queens to the islands of Greece and cities across Europe and South America, it is a tale of beauty gone wild and Raquel's desperate search for something, anything, that mattered. It's the truth behind the beauty and it isn't all pretty. But it's exactly how it happened.

3glamour and drugs but light on insight  Oct 30, 2009
Miss Reyes has had a unique life so far and I found her memior to be interesting for the most part and boring in others. I recommend it with limitations because of the glossing over of the crisis that lead to her transition.
The first few chapters gets wrapped up in drug parties as her life appearently revolved around them in the 1990s. I found this actually boring.
She tells about the prostitution that she did with remarkable candor. She is a young transexual that is beautiful and passing was no issue and her attraction to men seemed to make her decision to transition almost a no-brainer, while she gave little detail about what happened in school and her dysfunctional relationship with her alcoholic mother is woven into her story in a sketchy way.
On the whole I gained little insight into the issues of young transsexual women. If you want that read TransParents, for example. But Raquel Reye's story is unique and it is her own. Once you get over the numerous typos in the text the narrative flows freely and it is a quick read that leaves you with as many questions as answers about her amazing life that is still unfolding.

5Goddess  Oct 20, 2009
I liked this book. Based on what Rachael has written about how she has lived her life, I'm surprised she is still alive. The book has a good flow and touches on three different trannies and how they have lived and shared their lives with each other. Each has unique problems within themselves, although the common bond is being accepted by society and their struggle with that. Also of course trying to find a significant other that will accept them as they are. All three are very brave women who often make mistakes but seem to persevere. It's not particularly an erotic read but it does have some moments. It's a fun read that is very interesting.

3Not bad  Aug 21, 2009
I kept reading this book looking for some descriptions of her body changes and the feelings transsexuals go through. What I got was a well written book full of ego. If you want to read about unbridled lust, drug abuse and lavish living buy it. If you want to get inside the head of a transsexual, look elsewhere.

4Raquel Reyes Responds ... And Thanks Everyone For The Support  Feb 21, 2009
First of all, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported my efforts. The book has been selling so well. It was reviewed fairly and positively by The St. Petersburg Times (TBT), Xtreme, and I have received countless emails from people who walked away having been transformed by reading my story. As for the people like Nick P and L. Oberdorf below, they certainly are entitled to their opinions but anyone who uses phrases like "akin to a story one would tell another at 3AM at a Waffle House" in their review doesn't even merit a response from me and really needs to rethink his little career as an amateur critic. This is my memoir, my journey, my life and it is a truthful representation of my experience. My life like my story is not for everyone. It was not written for everyone. I wrote it for me. I am happy with it and it has appealed to a much broader audience than I expected. So thank you for those who have written me and for those who continue to read "Goddess."
