Goddess: Memoir of a Transsexual

She became the iconic image of the perfect transsexual female. A stunningly beautiful face and body that exploded onto the world wide web at the turn of the millenium and inspired artists and photographers and provoked adulation and confusion in countless men AND women. Raquel Reyes' charismatic presence, jaw dropping beauty and bold sensuality are the stuff of legend... but it's her life, the one she chose and ultimately survived, that fuels this rich and entertaining read. Written with great style by Raquel herself, it is a vivid recreation of a life filled with pain and pleasure, glamour and heartache, self destruction and redemption. From Tampa where she was born to the clandestine brothels of Boston and New York to the mansions of Miami Beach and Los Angeles where she played with actors, rock stars and porn queens to the islands of Greece and cities across Europe and South America, it is a tale of beauty gone wild and Raquel's desperate search for something, anything, that mattered. It's the truth behind the beauty and it isn't all pretty. But it's exactly how it happened.

2Difficult to read  Jan 03, 2008
By Lisa O.
Given the excellent reader reviews, I bought this book expecting a really good story. Unfortunately I didn't find one. I believe there is an amazing story to tell here, however her almost complete focus on the drinking and drugging became boring. I would have loved to really learn about her life, and the reader does indeed get bits and pieces that leave you wanting more; unfortunately the story inevitably reverts back to her partying. Additionally, the book is full of typos, misspellings and grammatical errors, making it very difficult to read.

5Great portrayal of a great woman  Aug 25, 2007
By Chloe Lynn "Chloe"
This is the first book I've read in one day in years and years - and now I'm reading it for a second time. Raquel is beautiful, smart, sassy, sexy and a real survivor. She has overcome so many obstacles in her life - abuse, drugs, and transsexualism - to become a thriving woman. This is a very different perspective from the rather clinical books by transsexuals. Now she is an amazing woman in her own right and her story is both compelling and enlightening. The book is an entertaining and fun celebration of femininity in all its forms. I highly recommend this book.

5Goddess The Woman, The Book!!!  Aug 21, 2007
By Brian Stone
I know I was excited when my copy had arrived, however; what I didn't know, was the the journey Raquel Reyes was about to take me on. I was surprised by the raw honesty and was thankful for it. This is a must read!!!! I could have read the book in one night, but I didn't want it to end (so I stretched it out). There are points of encouragement and inspiration that I will definitely take with me, again thanks! This is something I will never forget, I would want to read a continuation years down the road.

2Interesting but seriously lacking.  Jan 07, 2008
By Nick Papagiorgio
Drugs. Parties. Hormones. It's amazing the sort of crazy life one can live and still pull back from the abyss.

The story itself was good enough, though I admit that I only made it to Chapter 21 (which begins on page 65) before finally giving up on it. I liked reading about the parties, the transformation, the nightlife, but the editing (or lack thereof) completely ruined the book for me.

While chronological, the wording lacked depth and was more akin to a story one would tell another at 3AM at a Waffle House. The spelling was horrible, sometimes making up to four obvious mistakes per chapter...which is pretty bad since most of the chapters were 3-5 pages long. Such simple, yet abundant, mistakes as "Your beautiful" made me cringe and I would have to take a breath before trudging on. It's as if the writer/editor did nothing more than click "Fix All" on Word before printing it out and slapping a cover on it.

Had it not been for these glaring errors, I would have given it four stars. If there is another edition, printed after the writer/editor learns what a conjunction is, then I will raise my rating. Until then, it only gets 2.

And that's being generous.

5You simply must read this book!  Sep 07, 2007
By J. R. Black "Roman"
I knew I was going to love this book before I even read it. What I didn't know was that I would not be able to put it down. Craving to read the book to the end, I did just that. I love the realness and the beauty of her words. This book will take you on an emotional ride...if you can think of an emotion, then she creates the setting for you to feel it. A masterpiece created twice, Raquel Reyes and now her book!
