Going to the Gradies: Humor in Surgical Training?

July 1st, 1964, finds Dr. Mark Telfair embarking upon a five-year training adventure in general surgery. His story begins with surgical internship at Atlanta’s inner-city Grady Memorial Hospital, and continues during four surgical residency years that follow. Recall the 1960s were an era filled with racial tensions, mixed feelings about the war in Vietnam, and rapidly changing sexual morality; to this add the fact that Dr. Mark Telfair had earlier lived a somewhat sheltered life ... either in Atlanta’s Buckhead, or in the secure environs afforded by the tranquil Emory University campus. He quickly finds himself totally unprepared for life in the real world, one existing on the other side of Atlanta’s tracks. During the storm of training, Mark Telfair learns to find refuge in sanity-saving humor. Meeting under unusual circumstances in an operating room, he also finds the love of his life: an operating room nurse, who shares many humorous details of his training experiences at Grady.

5Hilarious humor preserves South's language heritage  Jul 01, 2009
Dr. Mark Telfair's hilarious adventures and misadventures made me laugh all the way thru this exciting book. The author honestly preserves the heritage of the original rich and beautiful language of the South, and pointedly disregards "political correctness". Laughter is the best of all medicines, with no side effects. This big dose of humor should keep us healthy for a long time.

5A Hilarious Romp  Dec 16, 2008

Submitted to Mary Traer as written by Pamela Bauer Mueller, Jekyll Island, GA

Dr. Traer immerses the reader into the rich experiences of medical school, internship and one young doctor's early medical practice. This is an emotional page-turner; but don't read too quickly, because you'll want to savor each delicious word. Five stars!

5Going to the Gradies  Dec 16, 2008
Dr. Traer's book is a masterful and winning blend of fiction and non-fiction set primarily at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital. Traer's flair for language offers readers his insightful understanding of the emotions and lives of patients and caregivers. This provocative, fast-paced book, laced with a bawdy sense of humor, is at once compelling and sometimes tragic, but is sensitive to the realities of the 1960s in the South. In its scope, originality, and readibility, Going to the Gradies, is a matchless book.

5Laugh Out Loud Reading  Dec 02, 2008
A mixture of humor and history, that is how I would describe this delightful, insightful book. I found myself laughing to the point of tears one minute and then reflecting on how times have changed in Georgia over the past 40 years.

The author did a wonderful job weaving the history of Grady Hospital into the life of the characters of his novel. Highly recommend!!!
