In 1967 the legendary Bruce Lee announced the creation of a revolutionary new martial art called "Jeet Kune Do," which was developed from his lifelong experiences. Lee was adamant that the art should never become stagnant, that it should "flow like water" and always continue to grow and develop. "JKD" was not meant to become limited by even coming under the definition of a "fighting system" or style. It was shared simply by showing the process in which it was created--which was essentially taking the best elements of a number of classical and modern arts and melding them together into a hybrid that could be customized for each practitioner according to that person's individual strengths and personality. "I have not invented a `new style,' composite, modified or otherwise" said Lee, "that is set within distinct form as apart from `this' method or `that' method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds. Remember that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see ourselves."
In my opinion, this is what Solomon LeFlore has achieved also with his book, GOTTA HAVE GAME: THE SECRET TO CHANGE. The title itself is a melding of old and new, as you read the book and understand how he has applied the contemporary terminology of having "GAME" and using game to reach a state of awareness that allows you to unlock your own potential and live a fuller, more inspired life. Like Bruce Lee, LeFlore has studied all of the classical philosophies, religions and systems that have been around for decades, often rehashed and sometimes reinterpreted in most of today's motivational book titles, but he has gone a step further in applying fresh, new, multi-cultural and progressive thought to the process. The book is modern without being trendy, and the principles are timeless. LeFlore also addresses the importance of the second portion of the book's title, "CHANGE," (a familiar mantra after the Obama campaign) in today's world, writing: "We find ourselves in a moment of great challenge and great promise--a moment that comes along very infrequently."
The author, already a pioneer entrepreneur in the entertainment industry having been involved in the production and or finance of over 85 major feature films, applies lessons from diverse personal experiences including his background as a scholar-athlete, international travels, global banking and finance, writing and producing movies, and dealing with inadequacies of the U.S. mental health care system in managing the welfare of his mentally-disordered brother. Drawing upon this myriad of personal experiences, augmented by the application of sound scientific study and strong spiritual awareness, LeFlore entices the reader to journey through twelve thought-provoking life principles and guidelines: Existence, Inducement, Resistance, Guidance, Alienation, Instigation, Illumination, Preservation, Revelation, Manifestation, Salvation, and Elevation.
I've read many, many titles within the constantly burgeoning market of inspirational books, but "GAME" is truly a hidden gem. I get something new from it every time I go back to review a chapter. Whether you are down on your luck or already at the top of your game, this book is a valuable and essential tool in training yourself on how to avoid the expensive pitfalls of negative reactive thinking and transform your thoughts into the realm of unlimited positive potential through strong, proactive thinking--the true secret to inner change.
