Don't miss this one folks! Jun 09, 2007
By Theomena College football maybe the topic, but the story here is the journey. Football junkies and the uninitiated alike will revel in this wonderful tale of friendship, good times and a healthy dose of local color. A modern day "On the Road" for the sportscenter generation!
Uneven, pop-culture overload but with a few gems Apr 28, 2010
By Juan H. Heath I've read a lot of books about college football (Rammer Jammer, Yellow Hammer; Dixieland Delight; Bowls, Polls and Tattered Souls; The 50-Year Seduction; etc.)
What intrigued me about this book was that it wasn't limited to just one conference - the author traveled from Big Ten to Pac-10 with a couple stops in the SEC and Big XII.
Also, having the perspective of an actual college football player was an interesting angle.
However, the author tries too hard with the various assorted pop-culture references ... if it were used to emphasize a point or even every paragraph - fine. But at times it's almost every sentence ... which is just distracting.
That said, the genuine moments - describing his relationship with his brother, the gradual unwinding of that parallel story and their shared history, not to mention the account of the game in which the author actually took the field was fantastic!
Those sincere feelings and descriptions almost make this book worth it ... sadly, they aren't a big enough portion, and the excessive attempts at clever wit are just a distraction.
I'd recommend it, but not as a first or even second choice for a book about college football roadtrips ...
You don't have to love football to love Gridchronic Aug 06, 2007
By D. Scott Gridchronic is outstanding and will be enjoyed by anyone interested in a story of passion and brotherhood. You don't have to be a rabid fan to enjoy the book - just someone who appreciates a great story and reading about someone who got out there and followed his passion for 12 weeks in the fall. The text is dense with great references to sports, pop culture - you name it - and you'll find yourself laughing outloud at many of the great lines - and then re-using them as your own. Enjoy!
Thrilling read - Very easy to relate Jul 12, 2007
By Doug Brown Very well written chronicle of the pursuit of the passion in football and the memory of a best friend and brother. It was an entertaining read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes/loves college football and well written dialogue. The author's use of the English language is epic.
Gonzo Football Americana--a highly entertaining and worthy read! Jul 07, 2007
By Henry H. Neff Jordan Wallens's GRIDCHRONIC is a breath of fresh air in a landscape of sports books written by pampered, self-centered athletes. Instead, we get the voice of an everyday guy who shares his love of college football with the enthusiasm of a fan and the cultural witticisms/observations of a cultural anthropologist. The book is funny and touching, with some truly creative stretches of writing and a touching undercurrent as Jordan's journey is inspired by the life and spirit of his brother Blake, who was among the victims of 9/11. A worthy read from an debut author!
