Commonly thought to be a red herring, the name “Manhattan Project” refers to the fact that its first offices were actually in Manhattan, at 270 Broadway. New York City played significant roles in building the bomb. The Army Corps of Engineers General Leslie R. Groves visited New York approximately 50 times during the war. In addition to being the birthplace of J. Robert Oppenheimer who directed the laboratory at Los Alamos, NM, Manhattan is home to Columbia University and many other significant sites involved in making the atomic bomb.
