Great book for young adults Mar 19, 2009
By Craig Bought the book and found it quite marvelous. I read it within a week then handed it to a nephew who loved it. i think the book is aimed for adolescents more than anyone. It really touches bases on our calling in life. There are many many elements within the book and even though there may be a little need of editing, the story is fun for young adults/kids/adolescents who are trying to fit in by finding their own love for certain subjects/things. Overall I loved this book and so did my nephew and his friends. I'd recommend it.
Great effort, but get thee to an editor! Nov 30, 2008
By Robin Thomas To start, I suspect that all of these previous reviews were written by the author, or people extremely close to the author.
This book has potential. The author obviously has an imagination and a passion for writing. Unfortunately -- and I imagine this can happen pretty often when one is self-publishing for the first time -- it's chock full of errors. I whipped out my red pen and started marking it up when I was halfway through page two. My sense is that the book was run through a spell-checker, but didn't get reviewed and edited by a third party nearly enough, if at all. I hate to get hung up on the technical aspects of a work, but the word usage, the sentence structure, the poor punctuation, the weird organization, the discontinuity of ideas...it all makes this novel really difficult to slog through. If any reader gets this sort of impression so early on in a book, then you know something's got to give.
The book starts off very grizzly, and tends to be rather dark. I keep feeling like the author sat down one day and said "I'm going to write a really serious fantasy novel and become famous!" rather than write just based on inspiration. The plot feels canned and been-done. While some of the elements are unique, this book reads a lot like a gajillion other fantasy books...I keep being reminded of 'Eragon' by C. Paolini (Heaven forbid another book should resemble Eragon; yuck).
So, advice to the author:
-Have at least ten other people read your book and mark it up with a pen. Friends, teachers, parents, anyone. Then follow their suggestions.
-Read the book aloud to yourself (or chunks of the book). You'll catch a lot of style problems that you'd miss otherwise.
-Rewrite 'Gwrtheyrn' so it goes beyond just having unique elements. A fantasy novel is "good" when it redefines what a fantasy novel can be. Think way outside the box. Don't just be creative with different bits of your book and your story, be creative with your entire approach to writing. And remember, if you draw on ANYTHING AT ALL from another author, people will call you out on it.
-Don't write what you think other people would want to read. Don't write to fit a stereotype. Write what you think is interesting, yes, but only because it's interesting to you.
-Go back into your manuscript, following the last four suggestions. Then grit your teeth, put all these current editions you're selling in storage, and republish with a new edition.
Indescribable...really! Sep 16, 2008

The book is marvelous! It is, without any doubt, the finest book I've ever read. It is fantasy at its finest and really an original story in a field of hacks. Gwrtheyrn and the Dominions has many magical concepts twirled into the storyline but it isn't the magic part of it that keeps readers enthralled but it is the mixture of mystery, meaning of EVERYONE'S life and how at loss WE will all become. I love fantasy novels, and I don't even particularly care if they're original or not. But then this book came along, and it destroyed my conceptions of what fantasy should be. Just buy it. You won't be disappointed.
The next book needs to come out SOON! Sep 11, 2008
By Minh This book is incredible. It will pull you in right away. The book is for anyone. Since I teach the tenth grade one of my students told me I had to read it so I did-It was fantastic.

By Victor I am a big fantasy genre fan, so when I saw the bookmark in the library, it caught my eye. I must admit I ended up leaving the library very quickly but only to find myself looking up Gwrtheyrn and the Dominions. When I saw it on amazon I purchased it, and for the next couple of days I could not put it down. Gwrtheyrn is a really great book with real emotions all wrapped up in a fantasy story about a young man who is forced to find out who he is and what he is meant to become except he can't because he has no dominion! It is a lot like real life in that many people must go through that exact same loneliness and confusion during their teenage lives and sometimes up until they hit old age! Anyhow I love this book and I am glad a story like this has finally been written.
