Handbook for Ironmongers: A Glossary of Ferrous Metallurgy Terms - A Voyage through the Labyrinth of Steel and Toolmaking Strategies and Techniques, 2000 BC to 1950 (Hand Tools in History, Vol. 11)

Handbook for Ironmongers: A Glossary of Ferrous Metallurgy Terms defines hundreds of items of interest to blacksmiths, historians, and anyone seeking knowledge of steel- and toolmaking and its history. Topics range from ancient metallurgical techniques to later developments in iron and steel production in America and modern machines and the biomass-derived consumer products and toxic waste that they produce. While it stands alone as an important resource, the Glossary is also an invaluable component of the Davistown Museum Tools in History series, which surveys the history of steel- and toolmaking and relates it to New England shipsmiths and edge toolmakers.

5A true masterpiece of steel knowledge!  Sep 16, 2009
By Erin Casson
When I discovered this book I leapt for joy at the oodles and oodles of detailed information in an easy to read format on one of my favorite subjects of all time: Steel and Metallurgy and Cutlery.
The author gets deeply into the world of steel and iron work from the most ancient of times until the modern cutting edge. He even includes information on nanotechnology and nanophase metals and the fact that it has now been proven that the famous "Damascus Steel" received its legendary cutting power from the inclusion of molecular fullerene nanotube and buckyball structures wrapped into the iron matrix. I would encourage anyone interested in these subjects even remotely to buy this book.
