Voluminous but flawed Feb 01, 2012
By Jan Reber With over 9,000 entries, one might assume that the titans of railroad fiction would be adequately represented in this bibliography. They are not. Cy Warman is not listed at all while the Frank L. Packard and Freeman Hubbard listings omit important sources, for example. Many important compendiums of railroad fiction such as Short Lines A Collection of Classic American Railroad Stories and Open Throttle are missing. The index for literature (fiction and poetry) jumbles memoirs in with an anemic selection of fiction. Much of the early 20th century fiction about railroads that is missing from this bibliography was written by current and former railroad employees. Their work provides an important record of and perspective on railroad operations and culture. Unfortunately, this two volume set is not an "essential bibliography" of railroading.
