Thrilling and humorous portrait of a Costa Rica naturalist Oct 31, 2009
By Susanna Danner An amazing view into the upbringing of a boy in the jungles of Costa Rica. This tale of Feynner's childhood on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica reminds me of the stories of the childhood of Gerald Durrell in Corfu or E.O. Wilson in the American South. All three men shared a zeal for the natural world and a mischievous personality. One of my favorite parts of this oral history describes the rural school Feynner attended and the far more meaningful and durable education he received from his abuela (Grandmother.) A captivating window into a place and a person.

I loved reading this book. This simple form book is highly readable. It informs and entertains. It describes a childhood and coming-of-age that I have never imagined. One almost has to ask "Is this true?" But one knows that it is. I was sorry the book ended and look forward to the next volume(s).
Understanding Costa Rica Apr 08, 2010
By Mark R. Stromberg A commercial tour of Costa Rica hardly introduces you to the people. A small eco-tour will get you in touch, and just wandering around from one hostel to another will immerse you in the culture. But we can't all make the trip to Costa Rica. And without Tico Spanish, we may not understand fully. This book will take you there in a most personal way. Transcribed from Feynner's words, the book tells personal stories of a poor, rural boy, often alone, becoming a young man in CR during the 1950s and 60's. Vivid description tell of the daily life of the majority of people living a hardscrabble life in the forest edges of Costa Rica. Food and shelter were constant daily challenges. We have all heard of the "destruction of the rain forest" but this book brings you to the heart of that tragedy. Global warming, the loss of rain forest, and species extinction are all examples of often unintended tragedies of the commons. Both Costa Rica and Feynner came out of the worst years far more aware. Costa Rica grew to embrace a pragmatic conservation program that includes a far larger proportion of the landscape in protected areas than in the US. And Feynner grew to become a truly nice man, an amazing conservation land manager and facilitator for field scientists. At least one more book is in the works to continue the amazing stories of how Feynner became a legend in the South Coast and Big Sur. Sometimes painful to read, but quite a ride.
Highly entertaining! Oct 30, 2009
By kerri An easy read that will take you away to the jungle and make you want more. Incredible and amazing stories of adventure and survival worlds apart from life as we know it today. Full of unbelievable stories from someone who actually grew up in the jungle and learned to survive in the jungle with out any modern conveniences.
