Clever Take on Gender Equality for Kids Mar 06, 2010
By Suzanne M. Murphy An accessible story highlighting the issue of gender inequality. Toth's tale takes us through Lisa's journey as she develops an understanding of the workplace: highlighting that for many years men and women were offered similar jobs, but men received more money (plus benefits!) than women. Lisa's strong mother reinforces the importance of her daughter's education and in the end we learn how the workplace has started to change, but changes are still needed.
An end feature includes some fascinating tidbits about gender roles in the workplace.
The clay illustrations by Marika McCoola are at once both fresh and traditional.
Overall, a well-developed book for young people to read to develop an understanding of an issue that in this day and age can be difficult for a young person to comprehend.
