Hills of Truxton denuded Nov 27, 2010
By John Wallingford

Why does the political right, always become hunters? Who knows? You think after their political allies denude forests and frag natural gas from under their beloved hills that they would wake up. They never do. They are always doing stuff like "taking back their country" and complaining about Mexicans crossing their border. Thank god Joyner never does this, but just knowing his political affiliations makes me sick that he can't see that big business and money control his sport. Oh well. He wrote some good turkey stories here. They're easy to write as turkeys seem more willful and more individualistic than their gregarious nature seems to indicate.
Turkeys have definite patterns but they never fail to break them, especially when their lives are on the line. Turkey hunts are not like sitting in a treestand waiting for a buck to walk by, they are a more active form of hunting that makes for quirks and kinks in the regimen. In this respect Joyner's love of the hunt and his love for the wild birds is always present. But like his political affiliations, he never fails to mention the size of the spurs, the weight of EVERY bird and length of every beard. Is he paying homage to the NWTF? No, but it is obvious that he cannot take a bird without their system of measure in his head and the sense of his accomplishment.
When he gets over that form of egotism and that political self-rightousness that he is imbued with, he will be a better writer, but until then, he is still a great turkey hunter. Nice title. Some good thoughts. JW
