Hoodlums, Hopheads, and Hepcats: Rogue Males of 1950's Crimes

We are the rogue males of 1950s crime. In a lost America of big cars, cheap gas and open roads, we travel in rape, violence and sudden death. We stoke ourselves on booze, reefers, pep pills and heroin. We mock law and society's rules. Work? That's for jerks. Impulse is our only master. We take what we please, be it a payroll, a woman, or a life! Our numbers are legion, from two-bit punks to Park Avenue playboys, from mama's boys to hardboiled hoodlums. Drifters, beatniks, dope fiends, rape artists, grifters, teenage delinquents, and many more. We're all here, and these are our true life stories, torn from the annals of 1950s crime. One more thing: we all got caught, convicted, and liquidated by the state! Hoodlums, Hopheads, and Hepcats, singly or in combination, they spell "Trouble" for decent citizens and the police. Collected here is a double fistful of true crime tales from the 1950s, documenting their criminal ways, wild rides and dire fates at the hands of the Law.

5Raising Hell  May 04, 2008
By Shelby

During America's post war boom period of prosperity and international prominence, the average family's standard of living drastically increased; a home in the suburbs with two cars in the garages, fur coats and pearls for the wife, and private schools for the children. With all of this money floating around, could you blame a down-and-out drifter with a third-grade education and a rap sheet longer than Eisenhower's acceptance speech for trying to get a little piece of the action? Well, yes. Because, as witnessed in Hoodlums, Hopheads and Hepcats, the results are usually the same: terrified children cowering under their beds, a raped mother strangled next to the bloody corpse of her husband, and a three state manhunt complete with breached road blocks and a fiery gun battle with state police as it ultimate finally. This book will transport you to a time when crime reporting was shocking, personal and tugged at your heartstrings. Crime then was treated as an abhorrent act of evil. Today, rape, child abuse, and murder it is only presented as a statistic.

5Not for the faint of heart  May 06, 2008
By M. Evans

Two things are evident in IMP's newest volume of mid 20th century carnage:
Mr. Jacobs, in selecting the cases for this collection, proves without a shadow of a dought that sociopathic killers are not a modern day phenomenon, and, their senseless and hateful crimes are as gripping and powerful today as they were years ago when the first drop of innocent blood was shed. Those without a strong constitution proceed with caution.

5Firepower not fibers  May 05, 2008

A good book with many intriguing and terrifying police cases. I loved the `50s no-nonsense approach to police work... breakout the roitguns, set up the roadblocks and round up the sex offender. A welcomed change from the many CSI inspired true crime books.

5Murder most foul - 1950's style!  May 05, 2008
By Steve
When taking into consideration the level of crime that is reported day after day in the news, I am left to wonder if things are "getting worse."

After reading Hoodlums, HopHeads & Hepcats, I feel fairly confident that while crime is probably reported more today, the criminal element has always existed in the shadows, ready to STEAL what they want, and MURDER anyone in their way!

From the case files of this book, readers will be shocked to read the exploits of the pot-smoking juvenile who killed for loose change, the acid-throwing maniac who was intent on blinding a journalist, and even a "misguided human missile" that killed a 22-month old child for the thrill of it.

If you have the strength to look into the heart of darkness, take a glimpse at this work of criminal reality from the 1950's...

5What did Fonzi really do at night?  May 05, 2008
By Louis

Forget everything you knew about those happy days, those carefree times when nobody locked their doors and the kids where content to dance to the Rock `n' Roll music on the jukebox of the soda shop. There was never a time when criminals weren't lurking right outside your front door as proven in this book. Packed with gritty chapters like The Sadists and Ruthine, Beauty and the Butcher and I Always Wanted to Kill, Hoodlums will certainly keep the interest of any reader. Buy this book and for God sake, keep your doors locked!
