Really cool story about horses and what they have to say. Dec 07, 2009

I didn't know what to expect from this book when I first read it. Although it revolves around racing harness horses, the message that he gets across is universal for all horses and horse owners. He weaves us through the business and living on his farm about how each particular horse had an impact on his life. One horse in particular is there throughout most of his life leading the way in his learning from them. Quite fascinating to see how it helped him become a vet. It has drama, humor and compassion. I learned so much about the racing industry that I never imagined. At times, I thought I was actually there. If you like horses or animals for that matter, I would highly recommend this book. Easy read and very enjoyable.

Thank-you Doc Mitchell for writing this book! Feb 25, 2010

My husband and myself have a harness racing stable in Saratoga Springs, NY and we thoroughly enjoyed this book. Like the author's family, we love what we do; racing honest horses, and it hasn't gotten any easier since the author's family retired from the circuit. I recommend this book to all animal lovers as well as anyone who has a desire to learn about this wonderful exciting business. The author will have you enter our world completely, from the mundane daily chores to the excitment of the actual racing, sharing in the farm humor as well as the near catastrophes that are just a part of our daily lives. When you are finished with the book come out to the track and support what is one of the few All American sports. This is not the sport of kings. It began as the sport of everyday, hard working American farmers and remains within reach of anyone who wants to participate. Thank-you to the author for sharing the journey with the rest of the world....and what a long strange trip it's been!

A great read! Loved it! May 15, 2010

I have never been interested in horses, much less harness racing. I found the book hard to put down! Harness racing was so well described and easy to read, I found myself with fingers crossed and cheering when each horse came down to the wire. A great story of family and sporting passion.
While I have been seated next to Dr Mitchell in the numerous classes we attended first grade through graduation day, I had no idea. I knew he 'had horses'.
'Hoofprints in the Sand' is a wonderfully written book. The events are well described giving the reader the sense of being in the winners circle or broken down on the side of I-95. This book will forever be part of my library; unless of course it goes unreturned by my friends who have asked to read it!!
Well done!

Enjoyable read for Horse lovers Feb 02, 2010
By N. L. Griswold I could not put this book down. I was hooked from the prologue. Although I've always loved horses, I knew nothing about horse racing before this book. Loved the descriptions of all the horses, the racetracks, the people.....the nicknames! Loved the frequent dialogue that made it seem like the author was there in person. Harryman and Saint Elaine deserve kudos for a wonderful job raising two talented and creative sons. What impressed me the most about this book was the obvious support, love, dedication and determination that the hard-working Mitchell family has for each other, their friends and their horses. I'm hoping Dr. Mitchell continues to write more books. I'll be sure to read them.

A Salute to Marc Apr 16, 2011
By J. M. Gardner I had the pleasure to know Marc and his family. Amazing the love and loyalty they all have for each other and their friends. Marc's chronicles of the journey in harness racing they all took was an excellent read...I did not put it down until the finish. The sweet victories with their incredible horse Honey and the triumphs and disappointments with others was fascinating. I was caught up in every moment as he captured the atmosphere so well of the paddocks, the fairs, even the tracks themselves. As a horse lover I most especially appreciated his sharing the personalities of the horses. The ending in the book was a gem for me as I was not aware of how it all began and thank you Marc for that. I Liked and read All Creatures Great and Small.... I Loved and read Hoofprints in the Sand. This book is for every interest, the sport itself, the family united , the pursuit of dreams and happiness for anyone who has ever worked hard and sacrificed and overcome disappointments so worth the read..
